  • which injectors/turbo/ecu

Alright, to start this off I have a 1990 GTS-T. I was contemplating on what I should do (keep rb20 or go rb25) Needless to say, I went with the rb25. I'm hoping to see numbers of around 375-400whp.

This is my first turbo car, i've been around v8's for a really long time and I do know everything works for the most part so i'll be doing all this work myself.

I'm looking for input on which injectors, turbo and ecu.

I have a front mount already and this is what i have in mind so far:

    RC 1000 injectors
    Garrett gt35 turbo
    ECU - No idea

anyhelp would be greatly appreciated because, as I had mentioned i'm fairly new to these cars and what I have in mind could be complete wrong for the goal i'm looking for.

    Thanks!

You cannot nistune a s2 rb25. If you are unsure if its a series 1 or series 2 rb25 look for a igniter on the coil pack cover. (box about the size of a pack of cards) If its there its a s1 motor if not its probably a s2

If RB25DET a internally modified 300ZX ECU (with Nistune board inside) can plug into loom and control VVT. But need Z32 / 300ZX AFM, Z32 / 300ZX AFM plug (wired in) to suit 300ZX ECU.

More expensive option, but allows you to run a ROSS crank trigger setup to remove CAS (more accurate base ignition timing) is Link ECU or ViPEC ECU.

Top of the line would be Motec ECU, as there are more options for that ECU (aftermarket CDI for ignition, crank trigger, shock datalogging, etc). Usually used on the fastest imports in the world and racecars, etc.

With front mount intercooler, make sure it's sized correctly.

Hp of engine vs intercooler size is mentioned here (rough guide) -

Injectors, ID 1000cc injectors are E85, etc (need E85 compatible fuel hoses, fuelpump, etc to suit) compatible and popular. Deatschwerks are another option with injectors.

Injector sizing calculator is here -

Big lph Aeromotive or Deatschwerks DW400 fuelpump (should be Methonal, E85 compatible) to suit the injectors.

          Fuel pump calculator -

You'll need to hardwire fuelpump to get the 13.5-14.4 volts it needs (not the factory 10-12 volts) -

DeatschWerks - Leading provider of high-performance fuel systems. Explore fuel pumps, injectors, and more for all your EFI needs. Shop now!

Other things to go wrong are blowing intake gaskets, headgasket, so would suggest switching to metal headgasket, custom made copper intake gaskets (can't buy any metal intake gaskets off the shelf for RB25DET or RB20DET, it's RB26DETT intake gaskets only).

do what skym says but there is no need for 1000cc injectors that would be a waste of money if you only want 400hp, get a set of 550cc injectors, you can get approx 1hp for every cc in size so if you wanted you could run 440cc gtr injectors but your duty cycle would be around 85-90% so using the 550cc injectors will bring your duty cycle down to the safer area of 65-75% range the 1000cc injectors would be running at about 35-45% and would still probably be way to rich and are un needed till you want more than 700hp, the garret turbo is a good choice for that power range, as for your ecu use what your tuner likes and knows that will get you the best results also a set of yellow jacket coils or something along those lines would be a good idea

Jeez, thanks for the help, you guys are awesome! My intercooler is the correct size for what im looking for, so i have no issues with that. Great to know about not needing the 1000cc injectors, i'll save a few bucks there.

I also have a set of yellow jacket coils.

I'm stuck on the ecu thing now, not sure which route to go. I have to do a bit more reading on the vi-pec ecu.

Also, do any of you know where I would be able to get a copper intake gasket made?

Not sure about the gasket, if you want a base tune i have a apexi safc II for sale for 170$ so you can change your injectors and run the car.. Also have a 300zx TT ecu for sale 100$. You can nistune that.

honestly if you go vipec youll never need another ecu im working on getting base tunes atm for all 3 rb's but it does have a self learn feature and should come with a base tune on it so you wont need a dyno right away its expensive yes but well worth every penny over nistune or apexi power fc

                    RB25 is very capable
Everything stated above is great advice. 750cc injectors max, mine run 45% duty cycle.
Here's a link to my r33 RB25, mods are listed in the info

If I could recommend one thing to you, with your power goal, a GARRETT GT3076R is ideal. Quick spool turbo, will get you the power you want. I'm hopin to upgrade to that turbo this year

You only need over 1000cc injectors if using E85 fuel (similar to Methonal).

300ZX ECU should have knock control, knock maps, but is limited to 16x16 maps.

From what I understand, Link, ViPEC ECU (20x20 maps) are sort of the same ECU (casing, internals, etc) and made by same manufacturer (Link). ViPEC is a more developed version with software, etc. As far as I know they both don't have knock control. You need to add knock block to have knock control. So any bad gas from service station is a no no without knock block.

With Link ECU you can add a GM ethonal content sensor (when running E30, E85, etc fuels) and ECU can adjust tune to suit.

This place can make copper, steel, etc intake gaskets for 6 cylinder engine -

Tomei use / make steel intake gaskets on RB26 -

But copper headgasket with O rings, etc is common on Methonal, Nitro, etc engines.

personally recommend a haltech, although it is a stand alone, the right guy can make it run just like stock, way better than a nistune

Any ECU can be tuned to run smooth if using ECU for application or applications it was designed to be used with.

Nistune board is installed inside stock ECU and suited to close to stock engine. Stock ECU gets a bad reputation due to being tuned incorrectly (tuned via computer only, not tuned with engine, car in realtime on a dyno, etc).

Thanks for all the responses, been a great help!
I do have a change of plans, I just accepted a new job and I will be moving to Iqaluit, Nunavut.

Since I wont be home often (few months throughout the year) I don't see a point in going with the rb25 as I'll only be driving the car roughly a month or a little more a year.

                            Plans now go like this:
                            Keep my rb20
                            550cc Injectors
                            Garret 2871R turbo
Nistune or Power FC (member on here messaged me saying he has one for sale)
                            Stainless steel headgasket
                            front mount (already have)
                            AEM wideband

                            Any tips here?

                            Thanks!

that looks like a good plan nistune over the pfc tho cant plug into it at home to see whats up with your car, price of a consult cable over price of relying on your tuner for everything$$$$$
