  • Upgrading headlights.

Looking to upgrade my projectors to a proper LHD HID set up, and to say the least - wow. So many options...
In an attempt to take some of the hassle out of it, I found a company ( http://www.theretrofitsource.com/) that does this sort of thing. Has any one here ordered kits from these guys and installed everything successfully?

Note I have an R32 GTs-t and use projector type headlamps (bug eyes).

if you are using the projector healights (GTR headlights) already, your on the good path, you can simply swap an HID kit in, then adjust the horizontal and vertical angle of the lights with the adjustment screws to mimic an LHD setup

    much simpler than you think

The retro fit source seems to be a good site. A trustworthy guy on another site has recommended them couple times...

Frankiman - Yeah, that is what I have been using for a few years now, but if I swap in LHD projectors, I can argue that my lights are now DOT legal. Police like to pick on me because im young, so if I can whip out a few photos from my glove box proving a swap, it's just one less thing I have to worry about.

fred-R - Really? If you don't mind me asking, what is his screen name? Also, what forum? I wouldn't mind giving him a shout to see how he liked the set up/ ease of install, price, yada yada yada.

All that is moot if there is no DOT makings on the lens. If CVSE (in BC) wants to ruin your day, they will because of that. No amount of pictures and noterised paperwork will help you. No amount of monkeying will make them happy. In fact they will argue that you have now illegaly modified a factory safety device (don't laugh, I heard it with my own ears).

I won't try and make it sound like I was a major influence or anything but, when I was at SEMA I talked to 4 different headlight manufacturers and put a bug in their ear about making some projector style plastic headlights that are DOT for the R32. With all the Skylines that are going to pop up in the US in the next 5 year I made a good business case for the minimum 1500 units they would need to sell to justify the R&D.

I have all their contact info and will be following up.

Skym - Oh my. I'm afraid that sort of craftsmanship might be out of my experience level at this point in the game.

nimblestix - I found the install thread, but I'll have to take a look at it after I get home from work later tonight.

Cooke24 - Yeah, that doesn't really matter since the outside of the lens doesn't have a DOT marking on it.

Dragon Humper - Gotta slay a few dragons before finding the princess, right? Sorry. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the BC law states that the headlight just needs to be sealed, and have a DOT stamp? I know that the glass lens wont have a DOT stamp, but the headlight them self will most certainly be sealed up, and will contain DOT legal lights inside... The way i see it is that it's always going to be up to the individual police officer, and if I can prove that I'm not just buying the car to be a **** on the road, and have actually put some effort into trying to comply, they will be easier on me.

Oh, really? I would love to be kept in the loop with that news!

I am in the process of sticking in Porsche projectors with a clear lens from retrosource. Beautiful cutoff and powerful beam. The projectors I am using are large so I am having a bit of trouble fitting them in. I have one roughed in and installed on the car without the glass installed. I will post some pics later tonight.

Most law inforcement is dumb by default, they are told to look for DOT markings, so that's all that counts. I have seen projector lenses with DOT embossed on them, if you use those you are good. Anything else is subject to stupidity. You may be able to talk your way out by showing the guy your beam pattern but that's most likely a one time deal. I personally, have been driving around with the stock N1 lights for 4 years without an issue. It's all luck.

it is not the bulbs that have to be DOT approved it is the housings themselves this is why in any other province than Alberta you have to put in accord headlights to pass OOPI, a cop can not as far as i know give you a ticket for non dot headlights because they are suposed to be dot aproved to pas inspection to be legal to have on the road, all he can do tell you they are to bright or burnt out which can yeild a ticket
TO GRIP OR NOT TO GRIP.... THAT IS THE QUESTION
