    Hey all

    i got a bit of a pickle...

My power steering has been acting up lately, and i cannot figure out what it is...

what happens is i turn on the car, its fine, nice and easy to move it. then after a couple minutes it stiffens up and feels like its running at 25%. my idle will fluctuate a bit as well whenever i move the steering wheel when it cuts out like that. its like the PS is making the engine work harder to get it to move.

here the funny thing, if i turn the engine off, and then turn it back on right away, its fine again for a little bit and then will cut out... its random, one drive it will be fine then the next it will cut out every 5 mins...

anyone know what i can do...

HICAS ECU can reduce powersteering assistance to the amount it normally supplies at higher speeds (around 175-200km/h) when there's a problem with sensors, alternator, etc.

Going by engine cutting out, reduction in powersteering assistance, I would think alternator could be on the way out.

Sometimes random stalling can be traced back to TPS being incorrectly set (not on idle contact) or TPS is faulty and can happen when load is applied to engine.

Also check around MAF, piping behind it for intake airleaks (engine can start stuttering, similar to missing coilpacks).

It could be a mix of the above.

well its not coils, its not MAF. its not air leaks. there are no power issues at all... just the power steering kicks out... it just started happening about a week ago. fluid is all good. Alternator i need to check but according to my gauges, my voltage is within range... i know TPS is good, well according to nistune its at the correct voltage

Check at battery, not via gauges (voltage is lower at ECU).

Did you do the HICAS ECU error code check (check for bad sensors, etc)???

Any loose wiring into plugs, bad earths near steering wheel or steering angle sensor???

Do you have a aftermarket steering wheel (aftermarket boss kit that's not designed for HICAS steering angle sensor)???

havent checked HICUS ECU yet, need to look into how to do that

the steering wheel i have, i have had in there for month without any issues, same with the hub etc etc so i doubt its anything there...

Don't forget an important detail. After doing a top mount turbo swap, your PS reservoir was moved to the firewall, about a few inches lower than the stock location.
I think that if the pump is the highest point of the system you have a chance for air pockets to develop. It may be too low and causing air in the system.

Try burping the system and add some more fluid.

Not sure 100% if if this could be an issue or not.

            Good luck dude.

ok so an update... kinda shitty

so i was attempting to get air bubbles out so i was doing hard left and right while stationary... did that a couple times with the cap off. went to go fill the resevoir and i had wires smoking badly, enough that i ran to go grab a fire extinguisher...

the wires smoking were connected to the sensor(?) to the power steering lines under the intake, near the oil filter... its a 2 wire connector and it went into a main harness. then near the engine fuse box/relays there is a connector with 2 wires again that started to smoke a bit... here are some pictures...

now the wires that were going to that sensor thing are not constantly have 12v to it. not sure if that is normal or not... ive been trying my hardest to find the fuse that would connect to that wire but so far nothing i found will take the 12v off... even with the car off its at 12v

              any thoughts?

I know there's a loom that makes ECU kick rpm up when turning steering wheel. Also a loom that goes to valve on steering rack that changes power steering weight.

If you have power with ignition off its quite possible you are shorted to power somewhere. That could cause the smoking wires if its shorted to a ground circuit. I'd be opening up as much of the harness as you can. You'll more than likely find the issue.
