  • What the.....:(

Figured out the issue prior to anyone responding.

A belt snapped, got wrapped around the fan and was burning.

Does anyone know what the middle pulley does? One goes to alternator, one goes to psp, my grandfather (he's kind of the go to tech guy for me) says its most likely an air pump, but he knows nothing about skylines so that was just a guess.

Anyone car to shed some insight?

EDIT - Picked up a new ACDELCO belt. While I was chumming with the sales guy, he said that it may be an airpump that just pumps air into exhaust for better gas emissions

If this is true, can this be DELETED? as in leave the belt out and ignore it?

Since the belt is gone, I noticed the metal shimming sound I heard from before was GONE. So if the airpump (if thats what it is) is seized, I may have to look into a new one.

    Input is appreciated.

    Thanks guys

I was pretty sure that the middle belt your talking about is for the air conditioning. At least thats what is was for on my rb25 before i deleted the whole A/C system. There are such things as a air pump (polution pump, whatever you want to call it) but i didnt think that the rb's had them.

and if you heard a shimming sound, it sounds like it would be the a/c compressor clutch assembly and bearings going, check see if its sheared off or something, would be surprised if the clutch or compressor seized up either.

may just want to verify with someone with an rb20 (assuming thats what you have), but im pretty sure its the belt for the a/c compressor and something seized to cause the belt to burn off

      good luck

If you're talking the pulley in the middle of the engine, you may be referencing the water pump pulley which is about half way down the timing cover on the left hand side (viewed from front).

Air compressor makes sense. Looking at the engine it is underneath the power steering pump on the right side. It isn't the water pump. Water pump is attached to rad fan I believe. I may just leave the belt off because I don't even use AC and the metal sheering sound stopped once the belt fudged up. Thanks for responses guys

It's the AC belt. Alternator is charging, Power steering is working, I don't ever use AC so I am not worried for the time being. I can get some shots later and post.

i didnt think it was hard to know what the difference was between an alternator, power steering pump and an air conditioner pump especially when the lines are plainly visible problems and threads like this can be solved on google or the forum search function, basic engine knowledge on our engines is not hard to come by, next time might i suggest reading before typing, 99% of anything that could go wrong on your engine and how to fix it is already posted on this forum

The pump below power steering pump is the aircon pump. It has a clutch on the front of aircon pump and 6? or so (from memory when rebuilt the aircon pump) pistons inside that pump the gas.

If you don't change the oil every year the pistons inside aircon pump can make a knocking sound. Also not running aircon pump for long periods of time makes the seals go hard (needs to be run at least once a week).

Pump that radiator fan is connected to is the water pump and alternator is on the drivers side of engine. Starter motor is near the bell housing and connects to flywheel.
