  • blowing turbos, maybe oil restrictor problem?

So I built the top end of my rb25 series 2 over winter, did a bunch of mods, (front face intake, injectors, cams, oil cooler, Q45 throttle body, etc) but also upgraded the turbo to godspeed kkr560 (i know cheap but all i could afford at the time plan on upgrading in the near future)

So i installed it using the rb25 turbo oil restrictor that was off the motor, because the ones they gave me looked the same diameter but wouldnt work with the angle it was at,

Ran the 1st turbo for a month threw dyno, street driving a few days and one weekend of drifting, (ran at 14psi)

Took the turbo off to check it had severe shaft play, figure out my boost controller was spiking to 19psi didnt pick this up till to late probably so got a new turbo sent under warranty,

installed that (only thing changed was different oil grade)

Ran the new turbo this past weekend, ran it at 11psi , in 3 laps i filled up my oil catch can and there was oil everywhere ( way to much oil pressure or blow by) checked the turbo and same thing rank shaft play and blows lots of smoke out the back now,

So i know its a cheap turbo but theres gotta be a reason for the oil pressure or blow by seeing im only running 11psi thats nothing on those turbos

ill take a pic of my oil restrictor and post it up

maybe turbo gettin to much oil or not enough but somethings not right

also the restricted side of the line was on the block side of the line not the turbo side (installed wrong?) does the restrictor have to be on the turbo side or does it not madder??

Technically it should be on the turbo side but evidently it doesn't matter because it restricts the oil either way,

so is your turbo bb or not? I don't know anything about eBay turbo except to stay away from them..

How big is your oil drain and how straight is it? I hope your running at least a -10 for that?

And final question Why not get a good turbo? Woulda saved you lots of time and woulda added up to the same price by now except that it would still be alive :/

ya to late to wish about a "good" turbo at the time i didnt have the funds and have talked to people running this turbo and said it was decent and got a wicked deal on the whole kit,

        Its a BB turbo

Drain im not sure ill take pick of that its pretty straight , maybe my drain is to big, used the one they gave me

And at this point in the season its ether figure this one out or revert back to stock which will be a head ache or find a good used one but that just throwin money away,

2 turbos 2 different symtems of blowing, first one didnt smoke or blow by like this one was doing so strange

There's different restrictor sizes based on what CHRA you are running, so consult a turbo specialist (they usually know).

Angle of CHRA plays a role as well.

Make sure you prelube turbo before startup.

If a cheap turbo it's probably not balanced, using cheap parts. High boost levels = higher rpm and that's where turbo gets more out of balance.

In one case I have heard of, the nut was coming undone on exhaust wheel.

damn that doesnt help me at all ha...... no one local really does turbo's so ill have no idea on balancing, etc...... i just dont get why all that happened the 2nd time so fast like granted turbos can be bad but a brand new turbo to not even be abused to go like it did....

Usually happens due to being out of balance or oil related (high oil temps, lack of or too much oil, etc). With oil seal failing, sounds like restrictor size problem or shaft was out of balance and chewed up the oil seal. I had stock turbo fail on intake side, was due to high oil temps, age (out of balance).

If have stock RB25 turbo, can make a Hybrid stock RB25 turbo with Garrett or Holset CHRA, etc (Holset is supposedly better, good to 40psi). More expensive than a cheap turbo, but can be cheaper than a aftermarket turbo due to using stock oil feeds, etc.

Could try a Kinugawa turbo, as comes with oil feed, etc (made in Japan and sold on Ebay) -

It saves the head scratching and just need silicon intake hose, custom exhaust off turbo. It's similar spec to hybrid stock RB25 turbo and about same price (both are non ball bearing hence why they are cheaper).
