  • Lets Talk Clutch Fans

    Hi All,

My replacement Motor did not come with a clutch fan, I had sold the on off my old motor because I was going to go with an E-fan setup. In order to keep the stock shroud and keep things simple, I plan on installing a GKTEC fan for better airflow. I am wondering if I could get away with using KA/ SR Clutch fan as they can be sourced easier (and cheaper) and would not require the GKTEC Adapter ring (which is currently on backorder).

Is there a difference between the clutch mechanism between KA/SR and RB20det clutch fans in terms of height? I am 95% sure they have the same bolt pattern.

    Insight is appreciated.

Why DIDNT you go with Efan?

Small height difference with clutch fan is usually not enough to cause clearance issues with stock radiator.

From what I understand, the difference is the idle rpm vs how much clutch engages. If use a clutch fan from engine with same idle rpm you should have no problems with that.

The wide blade design is best and is why stock clutch fan is better. Can use a stock Subaru engine fan (wide blade design), shroud setup.

Technically its viscous clutch...real clutch fans are on International DT466 or Cummins ISX15

Not definitive, but looks like they should all bolt up

I have heard people using Efans with varying degrees of success, and its either hit or miss trying to fit them around the Power Steering Lines (Ive tried to install Altima fans but they interfered with the PS System) Improving on the Standard factory setup seemed to be the best and cheaper solution. People rarely, if ever, complain about overheating with standard clutch fans. Why not improve on a working design rather than scrapping it for something new?

I have acquired an RB clutch fan so I do not have to worry about compatibility but thanks for the link Purplestreak.

I went with an Efan because I was tired of driving around a parking lot on a hot day and it sounded like a 747. Or initial roll out off a traffic light was slow with the fan locked up on a hot day. Or driving down the free way and it would start to engage on a hot day.

Every one of my vehicles except my Diesel truck has an Efan. I might put one on the truck IF I upgrade to an aluminum radiator. I ran a twin fan setup on the R32 with a dual temp switch (one fan for low temp and both fans for really hot).

If I could run electric p/s and a/c...I would. Less accessory draw. I used a Chrysler oem fan custom fit in the shroud with a variable thermistor. It's tight but works great.
