  • No spark? (R32 GTS-T RB20)

I recently just bought a R32 GTS-T with the RB20DET. Mods that i could see was LED's put behind gauges, cold air intake, screamer down pipe, exhaust, aftermarket rad and electric fan & some kind of alarm system.. A/C is pulled and HICAS is also deleted.. guy told me prior to sale it had fuel pump issues. So i checked the pump it worked fine.. Turn it over still not firing.. I thought it might of bin coilpacks so i put some other OEM ones in.. Still no spark. Then thought it could be the igniter so i took one from a friend swapped them out.. Still no spark.. Im Not a mechanic so i really dont know what else it could be.. Does anybody have any suggestions maybe?. I dont know what else to check.. I also put a brand new NGK plug it the new coil pack & still nothing.. I need some advice guys..
    Thanks in advance.

Did you get any codes out of the ecu ? Have you tried a different cas? And how did you check for spark?

Check that CAS plug, wiring is intact and wiring is not loose in CAS plug.

Then mark CAS position with twink on CAS, cover behind CAS in 3x places around CAS (so you know exactly where to place CAS when refitting to engine) and pull CAS off and turn ignition key to just before starting engine (to get power to ECU, etc). Then turn CAS shaft (shaft that connects to front of exhaust cam) and see if injectors click. If injectors do click, then signal is getting to ECU from CAS and then from ECU to injectors (CAS affect's injector timing, ignition timing and what ECU looks at for rpm input).

You'll need to clear CAS error code on ECU after refitting CAS. CAS only goes one way onto front of exhaust cam (there's a flat edge, round key inside CAS shaft and that matches the flat, round looking part on front of exhaust cam). Make sure you tighten the CAS bolts down evenly. If not, when turn engine on there could be a grinding sound (CAS bearings) and that stuffs the CAS bearings. Also the plastic piece just behind CAS itself can make CAS hard to turn / place.

If that is ok, check the ignition fuse under dash. That fuse might have blown due to lack of a earth on ignition module (from memory that earth comes from I think is coilpack loom??) that sits on top of back of engine.

Im gonna pick up one of them code readers today.. I dont think the injectors are engaging cause you cant smell fuel at all. The way i checked for spark is i unplugged 1 coil and plugged in a new OEM coil and plug and tuned over the car.. Also think the igniter pack is ok cause it started the other car just fine.
        Thanks again guys.

Cam Angle Sensor controls both fuel injector impulse and spark/timing. Pull it off the front of valve cover, marking its original position first, then key the car on and spin the little shaft. You should hear injectors clicking and usually some popping as the fuel is sparked by the plug in cylinders with open exhaust valves. Also worth changing your fuel filter as they clog up in these old cars, not a cause of non start tho. Unplugged or failed (cracked solder) MAF will also cause a no start condition.

Unplugged or failed maf will not cause a no start but rather hard start and rough running. Experienced first hand. Code reader will be no good to you. Obd1 vehicles use different communication protocols versus Obd2 and CAN compliant vehicles. Not to mention the Data link connector is 14pin on obd1 nissans/Subaru and required an external power source. Obd2 utilizes CAN bus communication with 16pin connector and supplied power at the DLC.
