  • rb20det sputtering issue :(

I have changed the MAF previously, coil packs, spark plugs, o2 sensor, fuel filter all the things.

But recently I changed the fuel filter and now when I accelerate it sputters at about 3k rpms.. super lame. I was thinking since I recently changed the fuel filter that maybe it was fuel related? I was planning on taking a look at the fuel pump next or maybe a new MAF.

    Any ideas?

    thanks a miiiillion <3

No offense but the fuel filter is the right one? Flowing the right direction? How's the air filter ? Got a wideband ?

none taken. i get bashed enough being a girl ahaha. i believe so, i used the z32 one from lordco, and my air filter i definitely could take a look at. I don't have a wide band.

Some aftermarket fuel filters are not good and can restrict flow and is a well known problem. Always use OEM (Nissan) for fuel filter.

Intake airleak before MAF can make the MAF max out thus ECU hits the boost cut around 3000rpm (intake hose clamp used to clamp airfilter onto adaptor type of airfilter setup can cause it. The fix is to tighten the intake hose clamp or change to Apexi airfilter that bolts on with a gasket inbetween airfilter, MAF).

The other cause is the MAF not being connected and the ECU engaging a fuel cut (stops injecting fuel thus engine stops working, then starts injecting fuel again when revs drop a little bit and repeats) rev limiter, which should happen around 2500-3000rpm.

Sometimes it can be the MAF wiring into MAF plug that is falling out if pulled on the wiring instead of the plug when removing the MAF plug. Same on ECU side with MAF wiring or plug is not seated correctly into ECU (or the plug is bent).

Also sometimes it can be the intake hose clamp is loose behind MAF or airleak in rubber intake piping behind MAF.

Nissan Ecu don't like aftermarket sensors ...tried two aftermarket mafs on my 25 and had the exact symptom you're describing...no power, no boost, 25-3000 revs. $500 new one from nissan fixed that. Skym, don't you need to retune for larger flow maf like Z32 because the flow input changes, especially at idle ?

Check my project thread. Average temp is 6 and almost all the leaves are off the trees. Rain and wind for the next month then snow and wind for the next 6 ......yay.........

Oh that's wonderful all of you! So helpful. I will take a better look at the maf tonight to see if there are any connections loose or whatnot. I replaced the maf a while back and didn't seem to have any problems until now but it wouldn't hurt to look I also just did spark plugs again recently so maybe when I was taking all the piping off to reach it maybe didn't fully connect things well enough

Thanks! There aren't very many of us. I'm sorry to hear that, I'm going traveling soon and it will be the longest time away from her in 3 years! Going to be difficult

You're welcome (from all of us in this thread).

Also I would replace the fuel hoses, fuel hose clamps, as the fuel hoses can crack, leak where they connect to the fuel filter and could result in a engine bay fire.

Open some of the cheap fake aftermarket Z32 MAF's up (square part) and you'll see they are not well made. Like some aftermarket parts, there are fake parts.

You need to change the MAF voltage conversion table to Z32 and adjust fuel maps, then ignition maps, boost cut, etc. I think the Z32 part in her post was related to the fuel filter.
