    I don't think 'directing flow' is the right term here; the plate keeps the inbound flow from escaping. The radiator is a porous material; it creates air resistance when air flows through it. Have enough flow (high speeds) and the resistance will be enough that some air will prefer to bleed to lower-pressure zones than flow through the core.

    Edit: I've just reread what I've just written. It just got to me that the following phrase could have said the same but a lot less contrived.

    It's a funnel.

      "Funnel" or "Gimmick". Tough call. In any case the theory is plausible and it does tidy up under the hood.
