Geez, Sean, you must get a little tired of all the people who post asking how you guys bring in Skylines and get them legalized and you reply with the same straight forward answers time and time again (see the FreshAlloy board).

Glad your on this board as your knowledge is pretty much head and shoulders above most. And I agree that being the only one that offers a certain product, doesn't necessarily make it a monopoly. The information to legalize skylines has always been out there, just no one has gone to the extent you guys have to find them, apply it to the situation, and fund the costs involved.

Motorex Import & Sport Compact Feb 2004

      Hello Nick & Sean,
Thank you for the insight into my query gentlemen.
Sean I do beg your pardon for what you consider my apparent misuse of the word "monopoly" when referring to MotoRex's dominance in the US Skyline import arena however. My choice of words reflects a different interpretation of the word than yours. I am referring to this definition courtesy of www.capitalism.org
Monopoly: For our context here, a monopoly is defined as a single seller in a given industry. [There are massive problems with this definition which I will comment on below.]
No reference to any games here. As the editor of this site indicates there are " massive problems with the definition" I think this is where we have our lines crossed. Not all Monopolies are bad and not all Monopolies are board games either. MotoRex is however the "single seller" of modification services in the US. Is that not correct?
Furthermore, I believe most consumers are ignorant of all the time, money and effort they put into legalizing Skylines. I also didn't realize you have a close relationship to the MotoRex family. So my comment might seem more challenging and/or derogatory to you than it was meant to be taken. It is not. Please understand that OK.
From my standpoint it is an innocuous opinion probably shared by many Skyline fans in America who cannot afford MotoRex's modification prices. My sincerest apologies if my open challenge to MotoRex touched a raw nerve and my accolades for your tooth and nail defense of them. They obviously have a devout following.
I am curious however, how much did the crash test cost?

      PS,
Nick. Got the most recent issue of Sport Compact from JZ. Hat's off. A tireless effort putting your dream together . Probably one of the best examples of an BNR32 around anywhere. I was just thinking what a treat it would be to see a car like that at TAS.

Thanks for the compliment... Sean and I have been working on the new engine since... well, before this one broke. Maybe if someone in Japan wants to show it at TAS it will be there one day... or if Option or some magazine ever wants to do real GT-R World Challenge video...

As for whether or not MotoRex has a monopoly... They really don't. Anyone can go through the regulations the way they did- there is no barrier to entry in that sense. They are the only company that sells US legal GT-Rs because, quite frankly, there are no other companies that are willing to risk the investment.
        Nick

The problem is that Motorex is not a single seller in an "industry".

They are a single seller of a product . Not of the whole industry.

Calling Motorex a monopoly for selling Skylines , would be like calling Ford a monopoly because they sell F-150's. If you want an F150 you have to buy it from Ford . If you want a Skyline you have to get it though Motorex. This again - does not a monopoly make.

There are other registered importers . The other registered importers just choose not to specialize in Skylines . Motorex chooses not to specialize in Ferraris , or Mercedes. There are other people that sell Skylines. Anyone can contract with Motorex to import vehicles.

Crash testing - I honestly don't know exactly , but I was given the figures of $50,000 for the front impact , $35,000 for the side impact , and $40,000 for the rear impact testing.

I would say those figures could probably not be disputed much. Lab time , specialized equipment . Time setting up . The testing , the dummies , everything else involved. It is no 1 -or 2 day process. You end up with about a 200 page book of before and after shots , and test results from each crash test. Detailing each sensor , peak G's , etc.

Nicks car......its great to have someone like Nick with a GT-R. A person that likes the chase as much as the result. I have known Nick since his car first came to the US - way back in 1999. His was the first real "owner" car to come to the US. Though the years it has gone though several different build ups . I have logged a lot of miles in it. Quiet a few dragstrip passes in it . It has been driven from LA to Florida . LA to Chicago . Florida to Chicago . Most of the way on a One Lap of America.
Its a true driven car. More than a lot of people can say. Its been blown up a few times , hell , a lot of times , but it gets better and stronger everytime.

As it sits now , it would be the strongest all around GT-R in North America. And thats with no motor......just kidding. The next motor is going to be good. I think we have 90% of what we need in already.

Skylines at the shop..... well Nicks car . We have one R32 that was at the dyno today . Going to North Carolina soon. We did some basics to it . Intake /exhaust / frontpipe/Power FC/ 700cc injectors/ Nismo fuel pump.

We have one R33 and an R34 . The R33 we are just waiting on getting a release. The R34 is a shop car.

We don't do a lot of work to Skylines as there are not a lot of Skylines to get serviced.

Some pictures of cars at the shop , etc. The 400R is just pictures from Japan . Some pictures from TAS. The Left hand drive R34 is a company we do a little bit of work with.

                  A few questions I have....
Are there any new updates to this since the GTR R35 is now in the US?
From my understanding of reading this, with this anyone can just pick up a skyline from canada and trailer it over with the following documentation: title, insurance form, bill of sale. HS-7 declaration form, & this form on page 1 of this thread??

oh i forgot a different scenario, not sure if this is possible but have been researching this for a while now and looking for someone who has done it....
Fly into Canada, purchase the GTR, prior to doing so hire a broker on the USA side that will charge you and help you & provide you with the following documents/help...
                      brokerage-$150.00
                      bond-$3/$1000.00 value (min $35.00)
                      EPA/DOT- $20.00
Emanifest-$25.0duty & MPF- dependent on the origin...
you will then just need the Bill of Sale & current registration or title(some canadian provinces do not require cars to have titles) & there will be a duty fee (tax, but im not sure how or what they base the amount off of exactly, it seems to be different at every port)

here is what you need to know. If it doesnt have a motorex vin, its illegal.

it CAN be done otherwise, but as tyndago and others will tell you, you need to do a LOT of work, and it will cost you INSANE amounts of money. At this point, with R32s legal in the US in a few years, Its not worth it to most.
                        Victory is on the horizon..

Im going for a less expensive way than spending upward of 5k on getting it shipped to me...the car is not being bought to register in the US at this moment but be a rally car/track car only for a sponsor here in utah...if this one goes well than many more will follow suit and there will be a new unique GTR driving school created here in the US
