R compound for street.

Does anyone run R-compound on the street? I am planning to get a st of Toyo R888 for my car. Car will mostly be going on weekend cruise or some spirit driving.

How does the constant heat cycle affect the tires? I am not too worry about the rain and how long they last. I am mainly concern about the heat cycle since I head the life of the slicks/R compound are determine by heatcycle and not the treads.

i think max performance street tires are better suited for any type of street driving, they are much easier to get to their optimal temperature and keep them there,
even spirited street driving doesn't create as much heat as road racing would, hence the r-comps would actualy feel more slipery than ~180-200 thread wear tires

street legal r-comps were made to be able to drive to and back from the track without bringing the 4 wheels with you
they aren't really made for street

i woooooped alot of people at time attacks this summer with my Dunlop start specs, while most were using r-comps

Im speaking from personal experience with the r888. Grip does decrease after many heat cycles. I had 8 or 10 to a set then I replaced. You are probably reading "life" in terms of track use. No matter what they don't last long. I didn't drive much on the street but I noticed highway driving put significant wear on them compared to any other tire.

To be even more honest...I personally don't even think a weekend cruise or "spritied" (depending how spirited..) can get them warm enough to consider a heat cycle. Coming off the track they were so hot and sticky they would shoot rocks like a slingshot and pick up anything on the road back to the pits. Never even got close to that on the street.

I used two sets on the track this season. Tried star specs, 615 and the RS3's as well. I will be using RS3 next season.

I run Bridgestone RE070 255/40/17. They're a 140 treadwear rating, they're pricey and don't last long on the street, but they stick like flypaper.

^^ thats the thing with RS3s, StarSpecs and the likes, they have great performance on track, and with a good alignment will last 20.000km overall

i drove 10.000km with my GTR this summer, with plenty of tracks days (3 lapping days + 5 evening 20 minute sessions + 2 time attack events) and my StarSpecs are between the 50% and 75% wear marks, meaning they still have at least another 10.000km in them

and what impressed me the most with the SS, is its wet traction, my first lapping session of the summer was in a rainstorm (hurricane-like) with deep puddles of water on the freshly paved track, and i was passing car after car, STIs and GTIs and S4s, awd or not, they all let me pass and couldn't keep up, annnnnd at that time my AWD still wasn't fixed so i was running mostly RWD

StarSpecs are teh siiickness
but i've also heard great things about the RS3
not so much about the Ecsta XS, they wear really fast on the street, and not so good wet traction
and the RE-11s and AD08 are too pricey
RT-615... meh, i had some before, got greasy fast, then slippery

I've run R888, RT615s and Star Specs, out of all of them I was most impressed with the StarSpecs. Great tire for the money and lasts a long time. R888's are fun on the track but on streets are poo. R compounds are best left on a set of track wheels and used when needed.

I'm in the same boat as you, I also considered the R888s but decided against due to the quick wear and not being able to justify as my only tire. I'm currently looking at the SS and the RS3s, but currently leaning towards the RS3s due to the price difference.

Run R888's now,awesome on the circuit but stupid on the street. Simply not made fir this naturally.

Star Specs FTW! I've spanked some pretty serious metal wearing Rs (09 M3, Z06 both with instructors/owners driving) at our time attacks. The organizer said they didn't want to let me go to Rs to help keep speeds down.
I'm also going on my 3rd season although they won't get me much further.

I run Star spec as well.. They are pretty much the best for the money. Not so bad in the rain and not so noisy either. I had A048 on the Skyline before but I would have rather drive on these star spec.

thats a though choice, you can probly add the RS3 too
