TS: If you're worried about totaling a skyline, please get a honda, supra, or a subaru instead...lol

"Good buy", "Best car ever made", and Skyline do not go together in the same sentence.

I realize the demographics on this forum have changed over the years, as Skyline prices have dropped so has the average age of ownership but I am still of the opinion that they are not good first cars and I would not recommend one as an only car either, great toy lots of fun but if you find yourself buying snow tires for your GTR you are not doing any favors to yourself or helping preserve good examples either. Start hating I know...

I completely agree...I am quite a young skyline owner but it is not my first car and also not my only. It took lots of learning and reading before I decided to go for it as there are PLENTY of other cars which would have given me less headache (not with the car but with insurance) and matched performance (perhaps not stock but a full out rebuild on an S2K for example) but at the end of the day, I love my car and all that I've learned from getting it, insuring it, and now owning it. I find myself being the slowest driver on the road since I'm too busy grinning and catching reactions from people on the sidewalk and waiting for buses lol.

The skyline is a special car....but it is not the fastest or most capable car you can have in it's price range. One of the best cars in it's stock form at that price range no doubt about it...but a cheaper car with a good build (great learning process as well) can definitely outshine it on the track.

You don't need the car now....wait it out and learn responsibility and as much about the car as possible, it will be worth it.

As for your parents....if they see you doing research and working your ASS off for the next 2 years trying to get it, the last thing they'll do is try to get in your way unless they're really against it. Show them some skyline documentaries, there a few great ones on Youtube. Teach them about the legacy, how popular they are, why you love it, what other cars are in it's class and their prices, what you plan to do with it, and even bring them out to a meet to show how friendly the community is! They will eventually become quite accepting of your skyline addiction if all goes well.
Show them success! The car might mean the world to you but all your parents want is for you to make something of yourself...if all you focus on is the car and nothing else then it will end terribly for you. Chase the dream but dont forget about the end goal of life...being successful...focusing solely on this car will likely ruin that for you as you will be working more than you can study to afford it.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, DO NOT GO AND BUY THE CAR WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT....YOU CAN DO THIS WITH A SHITBOX $1000 CAR SINCE YOU'RE SO EAGER TO DRIVE BUT A SKYLINE WHICH WILL NEED MORE MONEY INVESTED INTO IT IN THE NEAR FUTURE WILL NOT SIT WELL WITH THEM AS A "SURPRISE"

Learn to drive a civic like you stole it, if you are young and on your first, even 2nd car (no accidents, just got bored of the 1st)

then consider buying one of these, they are no joke, you revv a bit to hard even with 300hp, and your spinning those tires

Im 19, bought my gtst when i was 17 and now have a gtr. my parents absoloutely HATE them. All they hear about is me bitching about things breaking down all the time and are constantly telling me to sell it. I have always been somewhat mechanically inclined from mountain biking and racing motocross but you will learn A LOT about cars if you own a skyline. Also, if anything a GTST is more of a handful to drive than a GTR due to it being RWD. When its raining outside prepare to have crazy wheelspin and always expect it to spin out in the rain if you give it some juice. Yes gtrs are faster but they are also AWD and about 500 pounds heavier. But if you cant afford to repair it when it breaks down (which is all the time), then i wouldnt recommend it. It isnt a car that you just get in and drive, there is ALWAYS something to fix on them and theres numerous hoops you have to jump through to get them on the road. Hardly any shops will work on them, canadian tire wont even inspect them. Nissan dealerships wont either. BUT, they are the funnest car in the world and I can no longer drive boring cars after owning one. Just prepare for huge bills. Cheap insurance though! I pay $1500 for a year!
