My wife is a CBSA officer. She's brought in a few Skylines and Stageas. She's well versed in the requied paper work. I'm sure she's not the only one and I'm guessing there might be an equally noligable counterpart in the US.
I'm assuming you've had poor experiences it doesn't mean that everyone will. If you have had a poor experience perhaps it was the approach you took.

@bobbo - I reached out to customs and will post the answer once I receive one.

I have actually not tried yet. My car is a 1990 so I haven't attempted the import yet. I have waited patiently for about 17 years to own one and would not want to assume that I know how to fill out forms I have never filled out. If it's legal based on the year, then I'm good for next January. If I need to put month, then I need to wait another 6 months. I'll do that if I have to, but I would like to finally get behind the wheel at some point.

I have actually chosen the GTST over the GTR because I'm frugal and put good quality money where it needs to go, but don't like spending more than I have to. The GTST fits my personality better as well as growing with the car. I can have the rb20 engine and do my ugrades, then high flow an rb25 turbo for even more if I want to go that route. Then I could drop in an rb25 engine/tranny and do more...then maybe even an rb26. I really want to enjoy and grow with the car and making it amazing and expensive right in the beginning is going to have me wanting more after a while and by that point it's really expensive.

Customs says just year should be fine based on my below question and their answer:

QUESTION: I am interested in importing a vehicle under the 25 year rule. I know I have to fill out form 3520 which states the vehicle must be older than 21 years to comply so I understand that.

I do have a question on form hs-7 where it asks for date of manufacture. The vehicle is coming from Canada and therefore only has year listed on the documents. For box 1 of the 25 year rule, do I just put year or do I somehow need to find and put month and year?

I'm not an importer and want to make sure I fill out the form correctly for a smooth entry into the country and that the car does not get impounded at the border because I was supposed to know the month of manufacture. Would it be possible to get a definitive answer please?

ANSWER: Thank you for contacting the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) INFO Center.

Based on your inquiry the year should be acceptable. You may contact DOT for further information at 202-366-5291.

Thank you again for contacting the CBP INFO Center.

        Sincerely,

        CBP INFO Center

          "Should be acceptable?"

          That's not very definitive....

@Daryl - I agree so I called DOT, a border center, and local DOT to confirm.
