  • Changing gearbox, diffs and transfer case fluids

Does anyone have any pictures or instructions to change the gearbox, diffs and transfer case fluids on a R33 GTR?

I just bought the car and don't have the service history so I'm changing all the fluids.

I've already done the engine oil.

gearbox just drain the fluid from the drain plug, fill from the shifter
Transfer case I needed a pump to to get the fluid back in(3$ pump from partsource worked)
Front diff I drained then ran a hose up from the engine bay and used gravity to get it in. Just open drain plug to get rid of fluid.

Welcome to the r33 gtr club? G.T.A by chance?

You don't have to fill through the shifter hole. There is a filler plug on the left side of the trans to fill through. Make sure that comes out before you drain just in case.
Anyone know who's white R33 GTR I saw at Mavis and 401 last Friday morning at about 5am with the cop car sitting beside it???

And I thought the shifter hole was for the transfer case. I don't recall where I heard that though..

SO i folowed the advice here on my R33 GTR last night , drained the oil from the GEARBOX and filled it through the shifter hole and guess what ? It went into the transfer case .

DO NOT FILL YOUR GEARBOX THROUGH THE SHIFTER HOLE.

so removed the transfer case drain plug and drained about 6 litres of fluid .

what a WASTE of 4 liters of royal purple 75/90 gear oil - i was pissed .

Thats what i get for searching the forums and reading the first thread i come across

NIGNOGA - if this really is what you did , i hate to think how long you have been driving around with an empty gearbox , and gear oil in your transfer case which takes dextron atf ..

Buy the oil, take it to the great Canadian oil change. They used my fluids and did all the work on my lunch break. Charged me $27 and had it all done in 20 mins

They have all the tools and equipment. You don't get your hands dirty and you don't have to deal with the oil after either.

Oh god, you didn't. That was some awful advice. You just need a hand pump and a hose for the tranny fluid, go get one at your local part store.

I'm seriously flabbergasted at that advice right now, wow.

lol well drained the transfer case and goign to fill it with royal purple atf tommorrow .

Of course the gearbox is now drained but the figgin fill plug is so tight i cant budge it - spent about an hour trying to remove it tonight with a breaker bar and a gun , no chance - i read somewhere that someone removed either a speedo cable or reverse switch and filled it there instead , just have to verify this.

Its really a simple set up, just looking at it you can tell the shifter is on top of the transfer case, looking into it you can see its sealed from the transmission. There's no need for hand pumps and all this elaborated steps. Also, your speedo mechanism is attached into your transfer case NOT your transmission.

I hope to have my R33 GTR sometime in the next few weeks and will be doing a full fluid change. Right now I am just researching what to get, does anybody have any recommendations for what to use in the engine, tranny, diffs, transfer case? What do you prefer motul/royal purple/redline? I know they are all good, there probably isn't to much difference between them?

I have been reading a lot of threads and have a few ideas but I would like to hear what everyone is running.

The car has 117,000km and will only be driven on the street for now, so I don't need anything high performance but I would like to get the best oil's I can for street driving.

                      I used:-

Royal purple max gear 75/90 in front and rear diff , gearbox.
royal purple atf in the transfercase.

noticed the difference right away on shifts.

There is a thicker royal purple max gear but if you use it in the gearbox it apparently causes alot of drag on the synchros, so i didnt use it.

Ok so I checked a number of threads on the subject and this is the info I have collected:

                        -Transmission GL4 75-90
                        -Tansfer case ATF
                        -Front Diff GL5 85-90
                        -Rear Diff GL5 80-90
                        -Engine 10-30

                          Just a quick update:-

I tried to use a jack on the breaker bar to remove the fill plug but the clutch slave was in the way and i didnt want to demo that unit if something slipped so plan 2 was used.

                          materials :-

1 pair of rubber gloves, protective glasses and a full overall suit , a 1/2 inch ratchet, 3 inch long 1/2 inch extension bar , a tube of Arctic silver based heatsink compound , a small jar of liquid nitrogen (not oxygen as earlier mentioned.)

submerged the extension bar into the nitrogen having already fixed it to the ratchet , left it in there for 2 minutes to freeze.

filled the filler plug with arctic silver paste .

pulled the extension bar from the nitorgen , passed it over the front drive shaft and pushed it into the plug , the cold bar on the arctic silver made it spit and steam abit , after about a minute all the compound was frozen . I gave it about another minute for the plug to absorb the lower temp, this was obvious by the fact that the condensation forming on the colder metal eventually froze, and then turned the plug . It was barely hand tight at this stage and it came right out.

left it all alone for 1/2 hour for everything to normalize and filled my tranny

not exactly the easiest of most conveinient way to do this , but having already drained the fluid i couldnt drive the car anywhere to get it on a lift
