I've heard that any close tolerances cannot be sandblasted or even shot peened. Only thing i know that could do it (and that im considering big time when it comes time for building my engine) is the WPC treament.

        Link: http://www.turbomagazine.com/tech/tu...ent/index.html

WPC Treatment, Professional Micro Shot Peening, Micro Shot Peening, Professional Metal Surface Treatment, Metal Surface Treatment, Metal Surface, Metal Treatment Technology, Expert Peening services, Shot Peening,

read the second page, says somewhere that shot peening and such cannot be done on crank journals, pistons etc. WPC treatment advantage is that can be done anywhere (including piston rings apparently)

anyway hope this helps, i dont think i would sand blast them myself
        good luck

You can beadblast the piston crowns but nothing else. If you use ductape to mask off the ringlands and the skirts and don't go anywhere near the underside your fine.

Just use low air pressure and kinda worn out glass beads. Don't spend any time in any one spot, make like you are painting something. The really hard to remove stuff can be scraped off with a putty knife, gently.

The ringlands can be cleaned with half of an old broken piston ring and a small steel wire brush (handbrush). The skirts, don't even touch them, they are what make up your piston to wall clearance.

I remember somewhere on gtrc, I asked about oem piston ring and I was told not to change them because these used ring were already used the way it was meant with the wall clearance.

So with that said, I told one guy that I couldn't order new piston ring because *for that reason ^^ * and he said, well, if you sandblast them and put new ring then it's gonna be like a new piston.

As soon that your remove the piston from the cylinders, you have to change de rings. I would anyways

sandblasting a oem piston would be disastrous. Unless your a pro with glass bead and even still, I wouldnt trust anyone. If i needed to clean em, Id use a used ring and a fine Brass brush.

If your eng has low compression on the rings, there are steps you could take. First off, before you replace rings, you need to take the eng to a machinist to measure the cyl walls to make sure they are in good shape. if they are, you can hone it and then buy new rings. Piston rings need to have proper clearance to cyl wall just as a piston does. You use a tool called a ring file to get proper clearance. Install, and done. If you just replaced the rings with new ones (with proper clearance) without checking the condition of the cylinder, you could run into problems while they bed in. New rings dont like a dirty used cylinder. Sounds similar with anything??? lol.

how about blasting the tops with baking soda? Body men do large panel like doors and roofs with since it doesn't over heat and warp the panels, it also shouldn't remove to much metal, if any at all.
