Baking soda is even better, you can even do this outside and not offend anyone. When you are done just wash it away with the garden hose.
Allen, I'm fairly certain that anyone even asking a question like this is prepared and capable to rebuild an engine themselves, and have done it before.......I would hope.
Like I said, just the crowns, don't hit anything else with the blasting media (whatever you use.....but not SAND).
And yes, you MUST replace the rings everytime. Just use a 3 stone hone like the one from Lisle and you cant go wrong ( the "dingle ball" hone is usless and really old school). If the 3 stone hone is missing parts of the cyl. then it is too out of whack to be re-used and should be bored).
