Aren't recirculating valves (those sick supra sounds) bad for the turbo's?

i have an hks ssqv bov on my rb20, never had issues, i prefer the sound without the insert, so ive have it removed for like 2 years now, and its vented to atmosphere and its no problem. but i recently removed it and added a flat plate of metal over the whole... since i now have a screamer pipe it wasnt doing anything because the turbo wastegate was always leaking out and somehow the bov never went off, but i dont really care but its for sure a good bov. i thought the inserts made it too loud. high pitch and annoying after the first few months of buying the car.

            You mean the flutter sound???

Not venting enough air from BOV creates a flutter sound from podfilter. It's a form of compressor surge and from what I understand, is the air reversing direction, going across compressor wheel hence flutter sound from podfilter. I can do that with Synapse BOV by just creating an airleak on vacuum side of BOV, where BOV doesn't open quick enough and enough to vent air.

Also can create a flutter sound with stock BOV at lower boost levels by just blocking the little hole next to main valve (quick release part of stock BOV), drilling small hole / vent on side of BOV where that hole is, which makes stock BOV not open quick enough and enough.

This is true compressor surge that damages turbo's -

We came across some true compressor surge while performing some testing on one of our racer's drift Skylines. The BOVs were closed during the testing to mak...

With Synapse BOV you don't get the flutter sound on a Supra -

Wow, that surge in the first vid sounds awful, but I love the flutter sound, just wondered how damaging to the turbos it actuall is, was considering blocking mine off but don't want to mess anything up, I'm interested I what u said about modifying the stock bov to make the sound at low boost, that's when it sounds good. I'll have to look into that, think it would affect performance ?I've also heard about modifying the stock bovs to hold more boost , did a search on here but couldn't come up with anything.

I tried the stock BOV mod on my car. When backed off throttle while off boost and got back on throttle the engine bogged before accelerating (around when it reached 1-2 psi on boost gauge it started to accelerate). Also it created a fluttering sound from podfilter at around 1-2 psi of boost and a loud wsssssh sound (the loud BOV sound that scares people) on a steep hill, when got on boost (I think was around 10-12 psi) and backed off throttle.

It's called the Tomei BOV mod.

It's basically the stock BOV mod in link below, but this stock BOV is made to be adjustable -

K anyone wanna chime in here.

I installed mine. Works good. But I found that if I boost under 6-8psi the hks never opens and I get turbo shuffle. But if I boost over 6-8 psi it opens no issues...

                  Is that normal?

I'm wondering if the hose going to it is to small a diameter. Would that cause it to open later?

The HKS ssqv 1,2 and 3 all have non adjustable springs which are stiff. On low boost, there isn't enough pressure to open them which is why the turbo shuffles. That being said, there is so little pressure that it won't really hurt your turbos. When I used to run those, I found it sounded cool with the shuffle.

If you want the HKS sound but adjustable spring rate, you need to buy the race BOV.

                      OK good to know

Ya I'm running the 3. So that's OK then...

Wasn't sure if the smaller diameter hose would cause the issue or what. Thanks!!
