    • GT, It might help clear up some "what-ifs" if you could list EVERYTHING that is causing the Skylines to fail in your area.

      If it is something other than the headlights, please list them.

          • hey lotus
            according to the inspectors manual at our shop, Skylines will need reflectors installed permanently on the sides of the vehilcles, yellow on front fenders, red on rear fenders at least 30cm from the ground, as well as DOT or SAE approved lights, that means all the lights, on the exterior of the vehicle. also need high mount brake lights installed on all vehicles newer than 1989, i think in 1990 they were mandatory on all north american built vehicles. also on the point of nuetral safety switches the inspector i talked to in victoria said they have to be on the vehicle and working if they are original equipment, they do not have to be installed if the vehicle did not come with one from the factory. he finally conceeded this point after i confronted him with the fact that brand new 95 audis sold in canada do not have nuetral safety switches. also has to have cat converters etc.

              It's sarcasm. I'm not sorry. You broke various forum rules and showed no ettiquet. I saw the little comment you made before the mods edited. I've nothing to apologize for, other than feeling that I owe you any sort of apology. If anything, you owe GTRC an apology for going out of line like you did.

              If you want to continue this debacle, PM me.

              On topic please!

              • Thanks E, what I want to know though is exactly what GT is failing the Skylines in his jurisdiction for.

                A complete list.

                • Both of you are going to take a deep breath and forget this little side bickering ever happened. This is an informative thread that has very important information for all of us current and possibly future Skyline owners. I and many other members are following it very closely, and none of us want to have to divert to petty pissing contests on the side. I would hate to have to delete or lock this post, but it will happen if you two can't keep it down and on subject!

                  • hey boost i said "its all good", i dont really care what trace thinks, this is a very good thread. like i said i tried to get it going 2 weeks ago! Just glad things are rolling on getting these lights approved, i also asked if anyone would be interested on submitting a full set of lights or a vehicle for SAE or DOT testing, if someone knows where we can go for testing approval im all for it, i can change the beam pattern on the headlights, install the highmount and side reflectors and then submit for testing, if i can get passed we should all be able to get passed provided we make the same mods, that way we can keep most of the original equipment that came on these great cars. seems a shame to install a bunch of fugly lights that werent designed for this specific model. PM if any1 in the lower mainland is interested

                    • Am I missing something here?

                      I thought the whole idea behind the 15 year rule was to be able to import a vehicle not meeting certain "requirements".

                      To be able to import a vehicle newer than this, can it not only come from the US, and be imported under the RIV (registrar of imported vehicles) program?? My impression was that because 15 year old vehicles are exempt from this program they are exempt from certain federal requirements. How then can the provinces negate this?

                      My father recently imported an RV from the US to Ontario, and being a 2003 it fell under RIV (federal) and had to have DRL's fitted, then no poroblem.

                      But if this same RV was from another country he couldn't have done that?
                      Why?

                      Also, these "issues" with headlights and such seem to be of a provincial nature as prevoiusly stated by a member here.
                      I had my Skyline inspected here in Ontario, and besides the fact that nobody in the shop could believe it's condition, it passed NO PROBLEM as my N1 headlights have a straight up/down beam pattern, and it has a factory 3rd brake light. BUT they are NOT "DOT STAMPED" so they shouldn't have passed?
                      I've also had MANY cars pass safety inspection with non-working or disabled DRL's, which every shop I've been to says is a FEDERAL requirement not listed under Ontario's saftey standards, which they follow. And besides, 15 year old imported cars are exempt from RIV so shouldn't need DRL's fitted anyways, regarless of year of vehicle. Kinda conradictory.

                      This problem is going to be very hard to solve if there is not one set of rules for everyone, fedarally and provincially, and even having people know the rules to begin with.

                      • I can' t remember all of the items on the Skylines here (and remember it is not me failing them) but from memory;

                        Non-compliant headlights (biased wrong way)
                        No side markers/reflectors(fairly easy fix)
                        Non-compliant tailights
                        Missing Cat Convertors
                        Neutral safety switches

                        I think all the glass was compliant but not sure. There also my be compliance issues with the seat belts.

                        Here are a couple of bulletin you guys may or may not have seen;

                          Yeah the unfortunate part is that while the 15 year rule applies to importing, that is a FEDERAL regulation, while saying what can and can't go on the roads is a PROVINCIAL jurisdiction. And every province is a little different. Welcome to Canadian federalism ... we all work together, except when we don't

                            Not to be combatative or anything, cause reading your whole post you seem to have a level head on your shoulders, but these questions and concerns of yours are elementary, and if you'd have read this entire thread or 1 or 2 from the legalese forum, your questions are answered. Exhaustingly answered i might add.
                            I always find it quite surprising when ppl are misinformed or uninformed about these types of issues. the first thing i did when i considered importing was read the hell of the legal forum as that was the major concern and area that one wants a to be sure about before acting.

                            • OK Glenn, I have a laboratory that is going to test my head and tail lamps, please advise exactly what DOT / SAE standard numbers you are looking for. This laboratory tests and certifies all manner of items and is recognised by the government, they will issue me a certificate and a compliance inspection label for my vehicle, so let me know specificlly what standard numbers you want.

                                Hello glen

                                i have yet to write anything to you or anyone else but i have been reading and keeping up with this all since day one.

                                i now have a question. i used to own a 1988 Mazda Rx-7 and i can tell you for a FACT that 1. it did NOT have any day time running lights, 2. and it did not have any neutral safety switch.

                                now why do i need all this stuff when my rx7 which was made right here in canada not need it? i understand about the head lights and all that jazz. but i do not see the point or understand why DRL are needed as 1. my rx7 didnt have them, and 2. there are alot of new cars out there that dont have them...

                                thanks
