  • gentlemen,
this is my take on the situation, from what i have read and posted both on mud and now here:
Glen's job is to delay approving the headlight issue this is to give BC TC time to move the 15 year deadline to a 25 year importation restriction. BC TC does NOT want RHD units on their highways. they have written this many times and after dealing with the government i have watched how they confuse issues to carry on their private agendas behind the scenes.
they know they have you by the short hairs when it comes to the head light issue. every solution you come up with will be shot down, i do not say this to stir up trouble but to show you reality. Glen is not the top dog and because of this he MUST play by the rules put forth by his superiors. His superiors do not want RHD on "their" roads. the rest of canada does not have an issue with this, just BC.
i will be VERY surprised if Glen will help in any way practicle since his hands are tied and his job is on the line.
BC TC does not want Skylines and Cefiros on the road, period.
this is not a dig towards Glen at all, he is just repeating what he has been told to say...
the only way you "might" win is to install a headlight that conforms to the SAE/DOT requirement and go to court over it. let the judge decide whether " the CVSE interpret 'equivalent' in only ONE way and that ONE way includes the equivalence in the SIZE and SHAPE of the lamp NOT just its equivalence in FUNCTION." is true or not. a judge can over rule TC decisions and make it law...

    • my eyes are burning from reading all these pages...

So, whats the short term solution for skyline owners ?

      keep 'em registered ?
      Keep 'em insurred ?

I quite frankly have no clue what to do, and it would be a shame if such a law were to be adopted.

Glen mentionned 'grandfathering' actually registered vehicles, but again, this quote means nothing unless it's posted on TC's website.

I'm confused, plus my eyes now officially burn.

I think my signature takes more and more signification with time.

      FTW.

          • If they could, they would of collected everyone's handguns a few years ago when they changed the gun laws

And come to think of it...... if the province is as powerful as they claim with their vehicle regulations, why don't they just ban them themselves? it seems a little suspicious that they need Transport Canada to do it.........

here is my suggestion, take it for what it is worth...
keep them registered, if you cancel the registration then you might get caught if you go to reregistered with ANOTHER inspection.

keep them insured, there is no reason to cancel covereage at this time. drive them as long as you are allowed (i would recommend someone find an american sold version that you can swap the drivetrains into should the worse case senerio happen.)

                cheers

                  • As a followup to another post I had made, I will repeat it here.

Don't bother contacting the people who work for the inspection facilities and ICBC.

Contact your MLA's and MP's directly.

Provide them with the legislation that exists and all the paperwork and information that you can. Let them know that this move is in place. (They don't know) These people are the ones that make the difference between allowing 15 year old cars into the country and banning them outright.

I am working with the politicians I know right now. And I am following up on it with them. The more people that do this, the more likely this gets stopped in its tracks.

Be truthful, be persistant, (don't be arrogant or abusive) include emails from Mike Woods, and others, as they work for the government, and hence, work for You. If they understand that this is a minor issue, (it really is) then they will fight for you.

Write them letters provide them with solid reasons that this move is unreasonable and they will follow through for you.

And, of course, do it now.

                    • I also sent the e-mail to Mr. Taylor to express my concerns, especially on the clause of altering parts and get it registered, as it's banned according to current Motor Vehicle Safety Act. I have given an example of Lexus GS300 and its Japanese turbo variant: Toyota Aristo. Got DOT/SAE headlights swapped, parts available... a feasible practice. (other than swap a Supra 2JZ-GTE in it, which is more costly than getting headlights swap for sure!)

If 25-year-old is implied and that bloody clause ain't gone, we are all screwed. ><"

                        • ok one thing i would like to know is:

DOT headlight... must be equivalent to OEM standards or so on... but
if you replace the skyline headlight with OEM 240sx from 94-96 i think... it is a close fit and is the same manufacturer NISSAN. and DOT/SAE approved.

doesnt it state somewhere that it must be DOT from the same manufacturer? wouldnt that work?

From what I've read so far, there's nothing that states you cannot use headlights from another source. Hence why we've got DOT approved headlights on the way.

                            • yes the zenki s14 would be a great start to do the conversion headlights BUT isnt s14 zenki JDM? RHD problem and DOT problem all over again?

You can use the headlights on USDM S14's. They are DOT approved. Doing this would make the Skyline compliant with regulations, but that still doesnt solve the problem at hand. Other JDM car's need to be approved as well, inspection shops need to start enforcing their inspections, and TC needs to cool down about importing cars.

Any changes TC is planning now won't be carried through until about 2 years or so. Yes, we don't need to panick, but we shouldn't procrastinate this issue at hand either. Someone correct me if I'm wrong or misleading please. Thanks
