  • DOT tail lights

hey guys. so today my dad woke me up to tell me that he just got a phone call and my GTR has arrived in BC! what a good start to my only day off this week! anyway, i realised that i have most of the major things figured out but i forgot about tail lights. somebody once told me that to make skyline tail lights dot approved some people are using round boat trailer lights. this just sounds rediculous to me but if it works it works. i just wanna make my car 100% compliant and i know that wont be easy but i havnt found any info on what to do about the tail lights. what have you guys done? thanks.
ps: i'll get pics of my car as soon as its here. all i have now is pics of it in japan.

I saw a guys gtr locally last week that had AWSOME looking tail lights. I was not sure where they came from, but I thought I had seen them before. The next day I am parked behind a school bus, and voila! They are school bus LED brake lights. They fit perfectly in the holes where the stock lights are, and the original lens was able to be removed with JUST these in there.

Now, I do NOT beleive this actually makes them "DOT" tail lights. But Its the best thing I have seen. I have seen other peolpe epoxy in trailer lights, but they did not fit right, and they went right over the stock lens. Which is like putting a DOT sticker on your stock skyline headlights and calling them legal.

I think the bus lights may be considered the same thing. but I tend to think if the original lens is gone and these lights are put in its place its the same as putting a dot projector in the healdight, which is acceptable. I am not sure where the line is.

But, you should not need dot tail lights, just headlights.

a guy from MPI (manitoba public insurance) told me this. he said i must have compliant headlights, day time running lights, tail lights and rear side markers. glass he said is not as big of a concern and is often over looked which he said he personaly doesnt care about. my 93 toyota T-100 pickup was made over seas and the windows have "made in japan" etched into them so i dont see why they would even bring that up. as for seat belts they just have to have english stickers or something but they arnt pushing that to hard cuz most new vehicles dont have them anyway. mabey this tail light issue is something new. who knows. thanks for the info tho. if anybody from manitoba could fill me in on what theyve done, that would be great. thanks.

Glass obviously isn't an issue as it does have DOT stamps on them from DOT Japan.

I think this was covered the other year...

I'm not in Manitoba, nor am I familiar with their "rules",
But I would imagine the "DOT taillights" is referring to a 3rd brake light.

Such as an LED bar under your wing or a in car one mounted on your back window.

yeah, they definately raised a stink on the 3rd brake light thing. My spoiler has that brake light so I'm happy.

oh ya i forgot to mention the 3rd brake light. he definatly said tail lights needed to be approved and i needed a 3rd brake light. which brings me to this... if anybody has put one on a skyline before, where did you do it? i was thinking right behind the rear glass till i realized that the wiper will block it and that probly wouldnt pass inspection. i could always put one on the trunk easy but id rather not drill holes in my trunk lid if i dont have to.

unless you don't mind changing your GTR to a GTS spoiler, I suggest you do that. Otherwise, their idea of a 3rd brake light will mean modifying a piece in the middle of your trunk lid. I've seen it and yeah...I don't much care for it. At least with a GTS spoiler, it's authentic Skyline material and, that is, if you like that low clean look to go with it too.

Even if the GTR spoiler had a brake light, I'd switch to a GTS. I personally do not like high spoilers.

for the third brake light, you can get led light bars that would mount on the inside roof of the car in the back window. I think it looks pretty good there personally.

i found a web site that sells DOT/SAE side markers, 3rd brake lights and Hella projector modules. most of the side markers are ugly but the 3rd brake lights look petty good. www.rallylights.com
