Any <21 Skyline Drivers On Here, Insured as Primary??
27
Aylmer, Quebec
Clean record
No claims
Full coverage (fire/theft/vandalism,2-way)
Primary Driver
650$ per year (55$/month) (1992 GTR)
850$ per year (71$/month) (2009 Lancer)
Both cars are with different companies since I could only get the GTR insured through a broker when I got it a couple years back...never checked again and see if my main insurance company would take it now that I have everything else with them. But for the price I pay I dont care, the car is stored during winter so it actually costs me like 400$ per year.
My dad who's like 55 pays 120$ per YEAR on his 2009 Lancer...LOL
wow, great rates out there for you guys. trickey has me thinking, i live in a big city as well but it would be great if i could get insurance from a company out in those small towns, as any company that deals with mainly people in the city may charge the most ridiculous rates. im out in markham so not a very big city, but these companies that deal with people in toronto/surrounding areas seem to charge high rates.
trickey, is your insurance company much smaller compared to these major companies, or is it simply your location?
i feel like getting quotes from a company near Mallorytown could get me cheaper rates
what do you guys think?
Manitoba Public Insurance haha, thats the only option.
There is a +15 to -15 scale here now.
If you were at + 15 you would get the full discount on your insurance premium as a reward for being a "good" driver.
If you were at 0 on the scale, you would pay the regular price for the premium.
If you were to have a couple infractions and you ended up at say -3, you wouldn't get charged more on your premium, instead your license would cost 100 to renew instead of 65 (for example)
Nothing shady about it. And as for auto loss of insurance, that saved my butt 2 winters ago when my car was in the shop for a month. You just pay a couple dollars extra each month, like you do to lower your deductible.
Only read the first two pages, I'll point out that people not in the same situation as the poster are doing absolutely nothing for helping him. 4 pages of people from other provinces or that live in butt **** nowhere ontario (no offence trickey) are completely irrelevant when searching for insurance in the GREATER TORONTO AREA.
I can see where this could be frustrating, as we all know the rest of canada pays 1/4 of what we do
edit: as for the insurance company, usually they are under a larger company that knows whats up. Its not about where your company is based, but where your address is. For example, In oakville (considered boarder of GTA) rates for a single Accord are about $100/mo for liability only. A friend of mine who lives about 1hr outside of the GTA, small town, pays less than 500 a month for FULL COVERAGE on THREEEEEEE RHD cars. A single skyline in my house would be at least $270 a month liability only.
Ryan is 100% correct, to summarize and make this thread more useful moving forward:
- Ontario insurance rates are not alalogous to other provinces (no one really knows why).
- Insurance rate is primarily based on postal code, age, and driving record not on where the insurance company is.
- The closer you live to Toronto the more expensive, apparently a postal code starting with M = More money for insurance.
- If you are young you will pay significantly more for insurance on ANY car.
- RHD insurance and LHD insurance cannot be compared in Ontario anymore, the game has changed.
- Listing your car as occasional under your parents is fraud, if you have a Skyline your insurance company has already flagged your account and may be looking for a way to drop your policy, they are more likely to investigate Skylines than LHD cars.
Here are some stories to back up some of my points:
1. When I was 17 I looked at buying my Dad's 6 year old stock Nissan Maxima. We called to get a quote and they wanted $4,500 per year ($375/mo) for me as primary living in Burlington. This was over 10 years ago and I had a clean record, throw some inflation on that and it sounds pretty similar to some of the rates posted here.
2. When one of my university roommates moved (and changed his address) from Toronto to Waterloo for university his insurance payments on a Ford Windstar were cut in half.
3. My insurance company has told me that they are planning to drop me next year. I have been with them for more than 10 years, have a spotless record, have my condo insurance with them, married, and I am 29 (yes all of these things are factors in setting rates). No change in any status, just dropping me because they dont want to insure my Skyline anymore.

Very true Ryan, however there's still lots of other factors other than location that insurances takes into account. Accident statistics based on age and sex for the last few years will either cause rates to be higher or lower. Obviously two doors > four doors.
In the end I'm no insurance expert but everyone's rates will always be different because of their age/location/statistics/driving record. My rates are probably high because of my "Brampton" address.
Brampton; where you'll get hit while parked; in your own drive way.

I know this doesn't count but I'm 39 in Edmonton, lots of tickets, no accidents and I pay just over $900 a year. I think age and location play a huge role in insurance rates. It's my primary car. I also have my wife's car, house, etc with the same broker.

my 240 is cheaper but they want to check it out. a full built rb20/multi/hydro/nocat/3" straight wont go well.
it counts where you live. i have looked into moving my address to Quebec for cheaper rates. there i would be $45 a month on my 240.
