  • Pretty sure I just got burned.

Hey guys, I picked up my GTR last night and everything was going well/the car was in amazing shape. I was relatively thorough while going over the car and everything met my expectations or exceeded them. In a fit of excitement I shook hands with the "owner" and considered it a deal. Handed him a Bank Note and he passed me a bill of sale and an ownership.

    Heres where things get messed.

The ownership is from Quebec, now it all seemed to fit because he told me the car was purchased from a friend in Quebec but he never bothered to register the vehicle here and decided to sell it. Now, I have done this myself in Ontario and I have bough cars from people who never had it in their names and it all went without a hitch. So I took everything to the MTO today and apparently have encountered a few problems. Heres the issues:

The Quebec Ownership is missing the original owners address, phone number, etc.
The MTO want's the vehicle transferred into the name of the guy I bought it from in order to make it an easy transaction.
The seller won't return my texts or phone calls about the issue.

I have a feeling I got excited and ended up burning myself pretty bad here. I have tried all day to locate the original owner and just "do the transaction directly with him" but Quebec doesn't have a UVIP to purchase to obtain any info, carfax won't recognize the VIN so I can't even get any info from there. I'm getting quite frustrated and beginning to start panicking.

I highly doubt there's anything I can do now, and any info you guys can provide me would be amazing but I think at the end of the day I just bought an amazing shape and really expensive parts car.

Well, did you go to the guy's place when you bought the car? You should know where he lives...

I was thinking that also, however; I paid via certified cheque. We did the transaction at his shop, I have his address, phone number, first and last name, etc. so I doubt he sold me a stolen vehicle and if that is the case then he'll be going down instead of me. I still basically ruled out the fact its stolen with the amount of information we have exchanged. Unless people are really stupid and don't mind going down for a few thousand bucks.

The unfortunate part is if he wants to be a douche and says screw me he doesn't have to do anything. Theres nothing I can do to make him switch the ownership, give me the original owners contact info, etc. Basically it was bought as is, and its currently bought as a useless car.

The only missing link you need is a bill of sale from the quebec owner to your seller. Umm..find that.....and your good.....(mto doesnt contact prevoius owners in my experience, so...)
Its not a lost cause over this. You'll get it registered. Where are you btw....noticed the 519...

If thats the case, instead of texting him, go to his work and talk to him directly. If he refuses or calls the cops just tell them whats going on and mention that you believe the car to be stolen. Besides, I doubt he'd want anyone hurting his businesses reputation by being seen as a criminal so Persue him physically instead of electronically.

The first thing I did before buying, I checked at RDPRM. They checked the vehicule for old debt the last owner may have. This works in Quebec, I think. After I checked again with the owner name, to make sure he doesn,t have bad records.

The only thing is RDPRM may not recognize your serial numbers because, like everybody knows, JDM cars doesnt have the same amounts of numbers. For me, it work good!

Pretty much took your advice and did this, it worked to get the "original bill of sale"

                      Im in Orangeville area!

So after I "found the original" and went to the MTO they requested a letter head from Nissan verifying my VIN. I contacted Nissan in my town and they guy said there was nothing he could do. After an hour on the phone with Nissan Canada they faxed me one 2 days later with an original in the mail. Took this to the MTO and paid tax on the original bill of sale and my bill of sale. Thank god these cars only sell for around $1000 :P

The car was finally given and ontario title!!

Thanks guys for listening to my stupid rant, and kudos for the helpful advice and the not so helpful advice.

More so testing the waters, more than happy to keep it but ever since I bought it my better half hated the idea.

After all that you gotta drive it for at least this summer. You might even be able to convince the better half that it was a good deal and a keeper.

Whatever dealership you called was a tool. All the MTO wants is a third party checking the VIN to make sure it matches. All he had to do was physically look at the VIN and write a letter to certify it matched...

Next time, if ever, just call another dealership.
