  • Helmets

I'm in the market for a helmet as I'll be racing early next year (in Japan) and need one.

I've been looking at the Arai helmets, they seem to be good. What brands are you guys using, and what is legal in Ontario, I don't want to buy a helmet here in Japan and find out I can't use it in Ontario. I would assume motorcycle helmets are fine?

    I'm liking this one:

Depending on the racing you are doing, they may require a Snell over just a DOT.

Find a helmet that is approved by both systems and you will be fine.

The helmet i posted above complies with Snell, do Snell compliant helmets generally comply with DOT?

Snell is multi impact, Dot is single impact. Generally real racing bodies(from my experience) require a Snell helmet.

You can use em in rallies, don't see why you can use them anywhere else.

For compliance with most motorsport bodies (involving cars) you are best to get a Snell Foundation approved helmet with an SA2005 rating. The "SA" refers to special applications as opposed to an "M" rating for motorcycle use.

I prefer the open face style for rally use since it is cooler to wear, less heavy and inside a closed cockpit car with roll cage I think it is perfectly adequate.

When I was doing my RSO first aid course one guy was saying he was in an accident on a rally and a branch penetrated the windscreen and hit his chin protector (on a full face). Ever since then he's gone with full face.
However it's totally up to personal preference.

I use a Bell Sport3. It was the best bang for the buck. Arai are the best from what I have heard from a few sources, but come with a higher price tag. From what I can gather full-face or non-face is up to the sanctioning body. The thing they all have in common is asking for SNELL SA.(exept VMSC will allow M)

Also from my understanding the SA helmet will with stand multple impacts, but not the M.

When I was trying on Arai bike helmets I found that they have funny fitment. The are aren't a very DEEP helmet (from your face to the back of your head).
I know they offer different shapes for their helmets, but it's something to consider.

The best advice I can give is buying what fits well and comfortably (that means trying things on, this is a must) and if you're in between sizes, go with the smaller one... better wearing out a medium to make it closer to a large, than wearing out a large and floating around in your helmet.
