The Skyline namesake is not applied to the CBAR35 simply because it's not based on a lower level vehicle. It's a supercar built from scratch, not based on a family mover. All previous GT-R's were based on Skylines of a lower trim level, hence the "Skyline GT-R" name.
In many ways, the R35 GT-R is very similar to the BNR32. When the BNR32 debuted in 89', it was a technological masterpiece. It featured many technologies beyond it's time and put many sports cars costing several times more to shame.
The R32 was just as advanced as the R35 back in it's day - it was considered a Playstation on wheels.
The R35 is doing the exact same thing today that the R32 did years ago, albeit with slightly different hardware.

The R35 isn't really a direct successor to the R34, Nissan seems to be trying to separate the "Skyline" and "GT-R" labels as much as possible. They're trying to establish a larger fan base and draw in a more diverse group of customers by moving away from the "boy-racer" image of the Skyline GT-R.
The R35 would be placed a bit higher than the R32 in terms of it's segment and competition. The BNR32 didn't cost as much as the R35 when it was new. The R35 is a more focused supercar - not that the R32 isn't a great sports car, but the competition wasn't as stiff in the early 90's.

The new GT-R is the spritual successor to the Skyline GT-R's. Yeah, there are a few technical differences (V6 vs. I6, etc), but a vehicle has to change to stay competitive. It has to improve and evolve over time, just like anything else. Nissan can't make Skylines that adhere to the same formula forever.

The way I see it, the R35 isn't "a disgrace to the Skyline lineage", but an evolved GT-R that is headed in a different direction.
    case closed .

back on track , well i guess there wasn't much track to being with but i know 2 people on this board from toronto that own 35's but thats all and thier not even active 35 guys are mostly on GTROC , but thats nothing against us GTRC is probably if not for sure one of the top 2 or 3 communities/resources for the early R chassis of the English speaking world ...and some quebecois
Real Skyline owners have lost at least one to a freakish accident (*- ω -) = #dungive'a

isnt the JDM version of the G35/37 the continuation of the "skyline" namesake? if so, then you should really be bitching about that...

Already covered. And Skyline badging on the EX35 crossover is worse.

I've got one. Sort of. It's my father's, but I get to drive it once a week when the weather is nice.

The following is my personal opinion and not necessarily a factual position:

'Skyline' and 'GTR' are two different animals, one being a specific series of cars with a heritage (the name 'Skyline'), and the other being a trim or standard of performance (GTR). Over time though, and thanks primarily to the R32s, the GTR became a signature possession of the Skyline, as a result of which whenever you hear the name Skyline, the first thought or image is that of the GTR. I can tell you from experience that a vast majority of people in this part of the world do not even know if there was any other kind of a Skyline apart from the GTR. When I had my GTS-T with an RB20DET, people would be baffled when I would tell them that it was a small single turbo 2L engine. They always thought a Skyline was a twin-turbo charged car (GTR).

Why Nissan decided to do away with the 'Skyline' name for the new GTR is obvious at least to me. They did NOT want to continue to monopolize the term GTR to a particular series of cars. My question therefore, is this: Does the chassis define the car or the engine? Or does it have to be BOTH? A Stagea with an RB26DETT is NOT a Skyline GTR.

Creating a uniquely separate brand name/series of cars under the GT-R banner was in my opinion a wise move, considering the fact that Nissan never gave up the Skyline name and soldiered on with it, albeit in a more 'toned-down' manner. Nissan already has a continuum of the Skyline that is not really a performance vehicle anymore. If anything, the Skyline name itself has lost its value since after the R34.

I call it the change of plans, with Carlos Gohsn resurrecting the GTR banner. And doing it as a separate car was the best move in the competitive world of high performance super cars.

And having said that, I think a web-based support group for any car becomes effective only when there is a legacy and a heritage of a few years established for that car. With a vehicle that cannot be modified to a very great extent AS YET in Canada, and with not much of a history to its career, I dont see why any R35 owners would want to be here. Give it a few more years and an increase in its affordability (not necessarily a price drop) while an aftermarket industry develops around it in North America, and we will see the R35 owners sign up in herds....

                        ...my 2 cents
                        (O||O___SKYLINE___O||O)

very nicely done, i agree with you about them cutting out the skyline name. this car imho isnt a skyline, doesnt even really fit the gtr line. this isnt a drivers car. its a giant lhd computer.

edit: without an RB. there ya have it.

I own one. have done since dec 2008. drive it every day.

It's true, most r35 owners that are active on the forums are active either on nagtroc or nissangtrclub or both.

It's also true that these owners including myself do not consider the r35 a skyline.
