  • iphone 4 with water damage?

For those of you that live in victoria, you surly know about all the rain we receive, and mass amount of rain we received last night. During my wonderful walk home last night in the pissing rain, I had but one thing keeping me going: Led zepplin one on my iphone. about half way home, my volume turned down to almost zero, and my side buttons no longer worked for controlling volume. In fact, I didn't even have a volume bar at the bottom of the screen. Thinking that this must be a problem with the digital song, I tried listening to multiple videos on youtube, but still no luck. After about 5-8 minutes of attempting to reset every setting in the phone, I gave up, and just continued on my walk home for about another half an hour.
By the time my volume had shut it's self off, I was completely soaked. You know, where your clothes have become one with your body? Yeah, that wet. That being said, my pocket, which had my phone in it was also soaked. Seeing as I have an otter box commuter case, and a screen protector on it, I didn't jump to the conclusion of water damage until this morning when I clicked the home screen and noticed my screen looked... fuzzy... That, along with the phone feeling colder than usual, and the home screen having the upper 1/3 slightly whiter then the rest of the screen. I immediately whipped off the case, and tossed it into a ziplock container full of rice and that is where it has been sitting since 9am. I just went to turn it back on, but nothing has changed..
I am just going to leave it in the rice over night in hopes that it can dry out, but if it doesn't, what can I do? I know apple has a strict policy on any product that has suffered "water damage", but in my case, it was completely un avoidable. It's not I like I dropped it into a lake, or bathroom toilet. I simply fell victim to mother nature. I mean I could have drove home... but I was no where near sober, and decided walking was the best route..

I have yet to call fido (my SP) or apple with any questions regarding the issue in fear they will just mark my file and I will simply be SOL. Do any of you guys know of people who have had been in my same place? Or better yet, any of you that have a similar story?
I searched google, and all I came up with is in very humid climates, it is possible for the phone to be "water damaged" even though it was never in any actual water..

    Cheers

Side note. The headphones still work, but I have no speaker volume. I also get a weird window that randomly pops up every few minutes saying that the interface im trying to use is not supported so I may loose signal strength or have slight interference..

"Take it apart into as many pieces as you feel comfortable to put back together.

Get a bowl and fill it with dry rice. Put all the pieces in there.

Give it a good 24 hrs. Re-assemble and try.

If this doesnt work, most likely f****d."

Almost a guarantee that your water damage indicators have been tripped. If not, you're lucky and may be able to get it replaced.

If you're really sneaky, it is possible to replace those indicators. Not condoning it though.

And don't try to dry it with a hairdryer. Only makes things worse.

Just give it time,I meant 4 to 5 days not 24 hours. A friend of mine always takes her iPhone4 into the shower and plugs it into the docking station to play music while she showers, after about a month of this the steam finally was to much for the phone and she ended up in the same position as you. She took the phone to telus where they confirmed it was water damage and told her she was on her own. She went home quiet upset, about a week later she thought she would try it out and it turned right on and has been working perfectly ever since - good thing she didnt throw it out !

        give it time my friend

Apple unfortunately doesn't cover water or physical damage. If you don't have apple care apple will charge you $25 to call them for tech support. It sucks! I work at Telus and I've had to fix quite a few problems with iPhone 4's being glitchy, I think that apple was trying to get the out so quickly that a lot of them are super messed up! If you phone is completely wrecked you can call apple or fido support and they might be able to give you a deal on a new phone? That really sucks, I have an iPhone 4 and I'm so paranoid about it not going anywhere near water!

the rice trick works for alot of things but so does time... lol granted iwth a phone you dont have much time to deal with the down time of not having it...

the only thing that works faster than rice is silica gel... you know the stuff, thsoe lil packets you get in a box of new shoes...

well you can buy this stuff in a more bulk pack at a craft store... its mostly used for drying out flowers... my moms uses it...

back in the day... lol... i dropped a pager into a puddle, it fixed it.... a few years later while rnning for a bus, cellphone into puddle, it fixed it... was listening to music on my cd player while in the can... it ended up in the toilet... considering my previous luck/success with the silica gel i didnt worry about it... i pulled the batteries out the cd out and rinsed the toilet water out of it... lol ewww.... lol let it sit for a couple weeks due to the solid soaking it received... the cd player still works and works good and that was like 10+yrs ago....

rice only seems to work upto a certain point but hte silica gel stuff works the best
How many kids with A.D.D. does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Thanks for all the input guys. One thing I have noticed is that it is some how turning it's self back on randomly... I pretty much only use FB for communicating now that I cant call or txt, and as im msging some one back and forth, my container of rice will randomly just start vibrating.. A little dis concerning.

Thanks for the heads up on the silica gell Shadao! After work I'll be heading to crappy tire for some electronic sized screw drivers, and micheals for some of that gell... or maybe a local payless shoes?? haha.

If all fails, I will probably just plea with fido or apple to give me a new phone in exchange for this one. They can't say no to every one, can they? lol

Took the back casing off, and it's ugly. The battery plastic **** is one with the rest of the phone. I have to get a replacement phone pronto, and it will sadly be another iphone.
I will say that it will be the very last iphone I ever put my hard earned cash towards though. This is NOT worth a fracking walk in the god damn rain.

What's wrong with the iPhone? It's one of the best smartphones out there. Water damages it like it does any other phone.

it looks as if the battery plastic has been smudged to the outside of the rectangle space it was placed in... Must have gotten hot some how? I dont know. It also just stopped turning on. period. Connect it to itunes and the screen would light up, then go black, go light, go black, etc. I unplugged the battery, let it sit for 10 minutes, and it booted right up.
The water damage indicators also haven't changed to pink, so i might be in the clear.

My Blackberry's been SOAKED and it's still working perfectly. Also, water damage indicators haven't changed
