  • I haven't been this dissapointed in humanity since Bush's reelection. Why can't people just listen to reason and simple logic? I'm going to have to invest in a VPN, even if I can't afford it. I don't want my discussions on the internet smearing my chances of being cleared by the CSIS for some of my national security sensitive job applications.

    Goddamnit what have you done!?

    • If the discussions you have on the internet can adversely affect your clearance should CSIS know about them, then maybe you shouldn't get that clearance.

Yeah you're right, I'm just being paranoid . What I meant is that, for example, they could easily say that I have non-patriotic tendencies by looking at my Harper position in this thread. For the same reason, I will never go on a popular internet forum (you know which one) because of the late FBI/NSA investigations (with Wikileaks and all). It boggles my mind to think about what kind of AI algorithm they have set up and what keywords they're establishing patterns with. Is so damn easy to do so too. You just need unlimited bandwidth.

Maybe you haven't noticed that those algorithms are immerging in everyday life. Google (benignly) reads your emails and then shows ads corresponding to keywords. When I was discussing about the GTR purchase with the seller, my ads were about imports; when I was corresponding with my colleague (thesis), I'd have ads about post-secondary degrees.

With an algorithm you can make the code learn certain patterns. It throws away unhealty (unmatched) patterns in favor of reccuring (and matching criterion) patterns or events. I've worked on far simpler algorithms a couple months ago.

I've also been hearing stories about scientists getting shut down for speaking up. Add that to the growing media censorship and it starts getting scary. I don't want to be in a situation where I find red flags only to have the government blackmailing me to keep my mouth shut. It happened to one of my teachers when he was working on a Hydroquebec environemental issue.

I'm currently below the poverty income because I keep schooling. I want to have a nice life someday and I dont want something I said in a random thread to bite me in the ass.

So... I'm probably gonna shut up from now on.

If anyone's wondering, I heart Harper btw. He's a swell guy.

Hahahahaha. I agree the Harper government is not the most transparent we've had (media censorship and Afghan torture scandal comes to mind) but that's a whole other debate.

Just dont forget we live in a democracy ruled by law and not tyranny. Your political views, given that they fall within the democratic process, should not affect in any way a CSIS clearance. CSIS are bound by laws and kept under checks and balances by the SIRC and the OIG.

Specifically, when it comes down to clearances, they do so in accordance with sections 13 and 15 of the CSIS Act which mandates them to provide "security assessments". Under the CSIS Act a "security assessment " means "an appraisal of the loyalty to Canada and, so far as it relates thereto, the reliability of an individual;".

This means they evaluate your loyalty to Canada not Harper or any other political party in Canada. Your views are your own. Whether you agree with the current party policies or not is your own business.

This is why CSIS' mandate is focused on threats to the security of Canada, which is defined as 1) espionage or sabotage, 2) foreign influenced activities, 3) activities directed towards to use of violence to achieve political, religious obtectives (aka terrorism), and 4) subversion (overthrow of the government of Canada through violence).

They dont care about your political views, as long as you dont go around inciting violence or illegal activities to promote them.

The "reliability of an individual" part will normally be evaluated based on your history (criminal record, people you hang out with, drug use, etc). Let's say you are the greatest guy in the world and you have never done anything wrong, but it just so happens you hang out with Bin Laden, then you might not be considered "reliable". This usually refers to something about you that could come back and bite you in the ass and at the same time be detrimental to Canadian interest given the clearance you possess.

          • Hitlers plan was working very effectively until he tried to fight a battle on 2 fronts , if he didnt decide to attack Russia while his campaign to occupy England and the rest of Europe was in the middle of it's execution things would have turned out very differently!

Its funny. I found that every old person i know (and by old i mean older than 20) wants harper in and sees no problem with it. Everyone my age around 18-20 is all like UGH we are ******. I think its partly joked. cause no one my age gives a ****.

Im happy Harper got in and not any of the other retards. But what i don't like is that he has a Majority. THE only good thing i see about him having a majority is no more tax money wasted on elections.

anyway. Whats done is done. Hope for the best...............That he doesn't ban RHD

Good day sir. I SAID GOOD DAY

              • Any majority government can cause problems however the NDP is much more dangerous to Albertans than Harper is thanks to the oilsands.

At the end of the day, choose your poison. I chose the one I already know.

                  • the only issue that has been brought to my attention regarding a harper majority is increased healthcare privatization, still maintaining lower taxes...but ya know, more out of pocket when you dun goof.

I voted for C, why? bc I actually read the big three parties' agendas and like what it offered the most.

I won't post on this thread again. Move on, mother's day's coming.

                      • The big surprise in this election was the last minute turnaround in Quebec. Bloc lost 44 of its 47 seats to the NDP almost overnight. I think it sends out a clear message to the whole seperatism movement (which is pretty old mentality, I say move on folks).

20 year olds want the government to take care of them. 40 year olds want to take care of themselves. Could explain why young people seem to trend towards the NDP and liberals. When you are older and are trying to make a decent living, the last thing you want is a NDP government taxing the hell out of you to pay for all their social spending.

Amen to that one. Goodbye to the Bloc, and good riddance. Quebec should just join the rest of Canada as one nation. Spread the love!
