  • loud exhaust + car alarms

looking to see if anyone knows there Vancouver City By-Laws concerning an issue I am having...
    thx !

this is an email I sent to the VPD,, I received a note from another owner concerning my car setting of car alarms.

I live in a 4 level condominium building. There are 2 vehicles in the parkade that have loud exhausts (one of which I own). I replaced my entire exhaust system about 6 months ago because it used to set off 2 car alarms, one vehicle 2 spots away from me and the other about across the parkade. With my new exhaust it probably sets the one vehicle near me once every two weeks, if that. I leave for work every morning at 07:30 and when the vehicle’s alarm goes off, it’s on for about 30 seconds and it stops.

I will be looking at solutions to resolve this issue. (silencer, offering to adjust the owners alarms sensitivity, etc…)

I am wondering though, if I am breaking any City bylaws or is it the responsibility of owner of the sensitive alarm that is in the wrong. In my eyes there are 2 vehicles that set off alarms in the underground, not to mention the trains that run along side our building that also set off alarms.

P.S. I will be addressing this issue with our Strata council but I wish to seek advice on how the Vancouver Police would handle this..

My 240sx used to set off about 3 car alarms everyday on my way into and out of my condo. (I was on the bottom level) I wouldnt worry about it at all unless its bothering you personally.

doesn't bother me,,, someone on the first floor left a note on my car, threatening to contact the strata... I'm going to CC the strata council on this...

not that it's a solution to this problem
according to our bylaws you basically have to be quite between 22:30 - 07:00
according to the VPD, if a car alarm goes off more than 3 times in 24 hours longer than 60 seconds each time, it will be towed..

So is it my responsibility or the owner of car with the sensitive car alarm ?

Have you tested dbs of your exhaust? Had the same problem as well but passed when pulled over once for loud exhaust. My building wanted me to revert back to stock or smaller exhaust. Told them it was okay with the cops and they stopped bugging me. It sucks that parkades intensify and echo noisy exhaust

The other guy. They are making WAY more noise than you are, the notes should have been on the POS that has the over sensitive alarm.

If it doesn't excede 95 DB it passes on most racetracks, roads. Mine is around 84 DB, so way under the limit and car alarms can go off. Older buses, motorcycles, etc are usually louder.

Some countries have stickers (if tested locally) or badges on exhaust to prove that they pass DB test, etc.

I know Japan uses "JASMA", which is 120 DB? -

              I just installed my silencer,,,,
now I know how a dog feels after the big snip..
other than those noise,,, I read that you'll lose a bit of HP in the mid, but what HP you get will come earlier in the RPM range,,, good for daily driving...
has anyone had any real life expereince ???

Only need coby muffler where cat was to remove drone sound from under car (can use higher flowing sports cat on the road or racetrack, which the internals won't blowout), square muffler near rear wheels, N1 style rear muffler to bring it down into the 80-90 DB area (copy factory exhaust with size, placement of mufflers). Those mods bring the DB level down and doesn't affect performance by much.

If really wanted to, can buy a Nismo 3" exhaust, which is sort of a factory sports exhaust and sounds nice. Nismo exhaust should pass DB test in any country that test's DB levels.

just invested in the Tomei titanium exhaust.. not really keen on modding it..

thre must be some sort of drop in to replace the cat,,, similar to the Varex system
                  http://xforce.com.au/cars/view_car/29

either way I think it's up to the car owner of the alarm to adjust it...
what if the car was parked on the street ?,,, is the VPD going to chase down every car that goes by it to demand they change their exhaust ???

kind of funny yesterday I saw 2 cop bikes that made my exhaust sound like a Honda civic (no offence to any Honda owners)

                    Oh, I see.

From what I have noticed it's the deep tone (vibration) that sets off alarms. I can make my cars exhaust go almost to point of no exhaust by just adjusting throttle position (no vibration). So it's possible with correctly setup exhaust to not set off alarms when going past other cars without any device added to exhaust.

If your exhaust is legal then in no way is it your problem.

Just make sure to check the laws in your province about adjustable exhaust gates.

For example, in Quebec it's illegal to have any sort of adjustable valve in your exhaust system.

In BC it's legal to have one, just not legal to use it.....wink, wink. This technically is not a "cut out" or "by-pass" because it is actually in line with the exhaust so it doesn't apply.
