  • For people currently insured, what was your GTR (r32 or r33) appraised at prior to getting insured?!? Purchase price is one thing but they said they'll need to do an official appraisal to determine the value, this will affect my rate.

    • you would need to get a apprsisal guy that knows about nissans and get him to do an appraisal on your car then give that info to the ins co. then you should b fine.

      • Higher appraisal value would equal a higher rate from what i've been told. So if i nudged the appraiser and told him this things not worth more than $6000, if damage ever exceeded that which is quite possible, I could take the "write-off" cheque and fix it myself?

        • I'm pretty sure if the insurance company writes it off, it's off the road for good. Don't quote me though.
Dang! You got shocks, pegs... Lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?

          • Mattias is right , if the insurance writes it off they take the car , by paying you a cheque they effectively buy the wreck from you .

My GTR is insured for aorund $26,000 , if you want a good appraisal go visit Mike Kent at rightdfrive , he is a certified appraiser and will give your car a fair value.

The value of the car bears no relation to the policy cost, in Ontario the insurance company is basing price on liability or personal injury , the cars worth is small potatoes compared to a life changing injury and with Ontario's "no fault" insurance - it's YOUR insurance that payes your losses ( car , income , medical expenses ) .

Mine is around $1100 a year full collision - drive it when i want , where i want as long as i have another daily driver (which i do) . I lucked out with my company , as far as i know they are not excepting any more skylines but i am being grandfathered ( appropriately lol ).

            • With that being said, here's as accurate as it gets.

walking off the street, Lant if youve got 10 years of licensed experience and a second car insured with them. If you dont meet those requirements, FACILITY!

simple as that. a few other companies may budge if youve been with them before, multiple cars etc. but thats it.

                    • another state farm insuree here. i've been with them for a few years and have another vehicle insured by them. my rate was totally bs though since the rep i was dealing with had to call the tech center and they made her give me the worst rate possible.

27 y/o, clean record, no accidents or tickets, insured through them for years, and my monthly rate is $238. barely better than what facility quoted me.

                        • I think Allstate is the same as state farm. I have friends with them. But theyve been with them for years before. I think I'll be fine there, as my family as been with Allstate since 1987 I'm told.

                          • I've been with Facility for a few years with my last highly modified Honda daily driver. Lately I've been reading Facilities rules and regs .pdf, its about 1100pages.

And from what I've read, it looks like their rates are heavily based on location. I'm currently in West North York, their most expensive territory. And from what I can tell when I move to Niagara in the spring. The rates should drop by about 50%.

If your over 25 and live outside any urban centres and haven't had an at fault claim in 5 years their rates for even a class 03 (high km daily commute) should be pretty reasonable. 3000 anually or so on a skyline.

My current quote on a 93 R33 GTST sedan through Facility is $9000/year full coverage (comp & collision). This is based on: ( over 25yrs old, 03 - high km, expensive territory - code 20, 0 - star driver as had a recent single vehicle claim so no penalties but no discounts either). Just liability is only is like $160 cheaper per year. Might as well get the full coverage.

1 at fault claim in the last 36 months means no penalty through Facility, however no discounts either. 2 at faults in 36 months would be a 20% penalty/increase.

I have no convictions in 36 months either but , FA penalties are 1 minor 0% increase, 2 minors 5% increase, 3 minors 15%

And if you god forbid have 1 serious conviction in the last 36 months, will be 100% penalty/increase according to FA's rules.

So I'll just have to suck it up for a few months until I move... And If I keep my nose clean, FA insurance will go down quite a bit every year. I will go up 1 star per year without an at fault claim, to a max of 5 stars.

But ya, even if you haven't had a claim in over 5 years, as soon as you have one at fault it seems your rates get jacked huge. Cause you totally loose your five star bonus and start at 0 again.

FA doesn't consider hitting an animal an at fault claim, BTW.

FA does not offer discounts for multiple vehicles either.

FA has pleasure insurance class 01 usage, max of 8000km per year, no restrictions on driving expect no taking it to work or school. The rates on the chart look really good for pleasure only, if you got a 5 year clean record. Should be 1000 to 1500/year, non-urban region, on a skyline. Now if your GTR appraises for over 15k then i believe there is a decent rate increase, that another major increase at say 30 something k appraisal. There is an appraisal value rate chart in the rules and regs.

                            Hope this helps some people.

And if I'm off base on what i've decifered from the Facility Association rules and regs let me know....

Also Facility Association can not deny a claim if you insure a stock RHD then modify it even heaviliy. Unlike voluntary market insurance that can and has denied claims in Ontario for even small undeclared mods. The voluntary market in Ontario has even denied the additional medical coverage of passengers in a modified vehicle that was insured as OEM. Ricers be warned!

                            • Hey All,
I have a car coming in from the UK, and I need to get it insured for the drive home or to a shop to get it saftied/e-tested. Does anyone know a company that will insure it while it still has UK plates and has arrived in Ontario before getting re-registered locally?

Also, any thoughts on a reputable shop to get it certified and emissions tested that won't totally rip me off?

                              • I just heard from Lant, that they will NOT be insuring RHD's that are under 25 years of age. As of recent, they had some claims made over the winter which ****** it up for the rest of us.

                                Abstract:

"Sorry I do not have good news today – the senior underwriters have advised that we would not be able to insure this car for you. Right hand drive vehicles that are under 25 years of age are no longer being considered under our collector plan"

"Unfortunately it will not – as I mentioned there have been a few claims that have sadly spoiled this for the many that enjoy these vehicles"

If you already have a policy with them then you okay i guess. Or it's just a matter of time before they start cancelling existing policies.
Looks like facility is the only way. Today's a sad day.
