  • Okay as someone who had insurance lined up and then got found out(an accident) meaning I've done a ton of research:
State farm - clean record, bring everything over for 6 months then ask
Haggerties - 25 yr old car and a lot of persuasion they might make an exception.
Farmer's Mutual - Clean record, you will supposedly get a good price(from the "legalize rhd insurance" facebook page). They didn't just give me a nope, I was actually in contact with the guy for 3 weeks before he told me no, bad record.
Federated - I went with them with a declared 2 tickets(10 over and 15 over) and an accident(they didn't ask who's fault). I was quoted 3grand a year full coverage with a 10,000KM limit however no other limitations. I called 2 federated offices and was eventually directed to A person(apparently the only person there who can do rhd). You fill out a form and she takes it back then sends it off to head office for approval.

Facilities - got a 4000 quote when my record was clean then it went to hell in a handbasket in the span of 6 unfortunate months and the quote went up to 8700 with a 30% upfront fee. This was only liability.

All of the above as a 22 yr old male living at l0r2e0.

Also last 2 times I was at Right Drive I was told very probably by June they will have their insurance company open. It seems they are a little late in following through so probably won't happen until next year if it does. I'm new to the scene but apparently this story has been on for a while, maybe Daryl can provide us with some insight? However I believe its "Mike's" project, and Daryl has nothing to do with it.

There is also someone near me with BC plates on all his cars that seems to be doing just fine living here.

/ not so sneaky edit: My hunt started may of last year with Facility, then continued early June of this year when I started with Farmer's Mutual.

    • Hm, interesting, looks like I need to revisit my list of rejections and try again. At this point I was just eating Facility rate until I could try and argue 25 year with collectors.

Thanks for the info. I would strongly suggest removing the name of the person, I know it's helpful, but you don't want that person to get a hundred requests either and just give up doing it.

      • It wasn't so much that it's only her that does it, it's that I called one location near me, got told to talk to her and given the wrong number then they sent me to her. She is the lady.

        • State Farm recently insured my Skyline and I am a brand new customer, as in I didn't have to wait the 6 months for them to add my RHD. However I brought them a decent amount of business with 2 daily drivers, 1 Skyline and my house.

State Farm has been a breath of fresh air to deal with, verses my previous insurance broker. I have found them very attentive and the customer service thus far has been great.

There are a lot of factors other than location that determine rates... Considering my factors, I am very happy with the rate.

              • Did some research recently to see if I can find someone to insure my GTR as a daily driver(My skyline is insured in LANT since 2011 and I paying 440 a year,i just cant drive it daily). So far found one broker who will insure RHD car ,but no SKYLINE or Supra. Also got quote from facility for 314 a month full coverage, not bad ,compare to 4 years ago the same quote was 500 a month, but not good enough. Will be looking and will update here if something found.

Federeted and Farmer's Mutual will not insure RHD at all.
Will talk with StateFarm tomorrow, see what they say.

I have recently proved that this is not a hard limit for State Farm... They are willing and able to insure a RHD Skyline without a waiting period.

Your approach was either not tactful, or you are too young, or you're not bringing them enough business to make them keen to have you as a customer.

                      Hope you find insurance!

                      • So State Farm has decided to cancel my RHD insurance policy 2 months in, stating the vehicle is not elligiable due to it being RHD.

After much discussion with the underwriter named Gene Lee, and agent Michael Tessier. They have told me me that they no longer insure RHD period and never mentioned anything about the 6 month rule.

They have since stated that they filed a rule against insuring RHD with the FSCO in 2013... When I mentioned that other people have gotten RHD policies since then, the only response the underwriter gave me was that it is hard to apply the rules equally across the board and that some policies may have slipped through.

I'm pushing near 40 years old, no tickets in like 8 years, clean record. I brought over my home and 3 cars to State Farm in May of this year, because they quoted me a great rate on my Skyline and said it would be no problem to insure.

Now i'm being shafted. Any advice?

Do I have grounds for wining a complaint filed with the FSCO for unfair practices?

                        • A flaming bag of dog poo? They can't just cancel the policy right out from under you. They may say they can but they can't. Unless you have violated some part of the policy as it is written to you, some change of heart after the fact doesn't wash. They don't have to renew, but they can't just cancel it outright without it running its course. File a complaint for sure, probably won't get you much though.

I revert to the flaming bag of dog sh1t stuffed into their mail slot.

                          • Jon thanks for the supportive rant! Lol.

I asked my State Farm agent about the 6 month rule today, and he wouldn't even look into it himself, in the fewest words possible he said he forwarded my question / e-mail to the underwriter. Ever since they sent me the letter cancelling my RHD policy, the customer service has dropped off the face of the earth. God forbid I as a customer desire a profeesional response and detailed explanation regarding the cancelling of my Skyline policy, lol. So I will be moving all my oher business elsewhere as well.

I have contacted about 30 brokers and insurance companies in the last few days... One was pretty sure she could get me RHD insurance through Echelon Classic at a quote of $92 a year... After some discussion with their underwritter, it came back as a no... She then got me a Facility Quote at $210 a month, which is not terrible, but it is double what State Farm was charging me for the Skyline.

A friend referred me to a broker recently, that broker says that they can get me coverage for the Skyline through the regular market without an issue. I have a phone call with that broker tomorrow, if it pans out I will ask her if I can refer other RHD's to her. Dunno if she is making an exception for me or what, so not going to reveal he source without permission.

                            • I gave up on commuter insurance years ago when State Farm did the exact same thing to me. Issued the insurance no problem and then two months later pulled the same nonsense. And that was back in '09 or '10. Fortunately have a service van for work and the DD econobox so I went with Lant/haggerty. Car needs reappraisal since rebuild as it's not labeled it's new value due to the initial appraisal during the build. Paid $180 for the year after tax no km restrictions just need proof of clean record, 25+years old and insured DD car in your name as primary. Asked the broker for an estimate at $30k appraisal and she said between $575-600 per year. Might be the way to go if you fall in that criteria. Good luck!
