Only thing I can say with regards to the secondary driver thing is it may be viewed as "insurance fraud". In no way am I justifying it or saying its right. My dads broker actually recommended I do it, he would've had the business anyways (we've been with the same guy for a quarter century), but we indeed do this. My dads E92 is a company car, so the 2001 civic sedan I drive is his. In the 150,000kms I have put on both my Hondas since 2009 he has driven probably 15 of those. I have been pulled over numerous times under this ownership setup (I do a lot of late night/early morning driving, usually with multiple people in the car, and Halton region cops have literally nothing better to do at that hour than check every car, understandably...it's Oakville). Never once ticketed or warned, just merely checking up on the people in the car.
Where I'm going with this is that I've had tons of officers see that I'm driving a car owned by my father who lives in another city. Never have I even been asked about it. Now I can imagine questions coming when a cop sees a 20 year old driven by a modded GTR owned by a 55 year old man...but can/will they do anything about it?
I'm sure this response is all over the place. I'm mid lecture right now but wanted to chime in because unfortunately Ontario drivers under 25 have no choice but to do this

As tenkay said things are much different out here. Just fill out a simple kenetix report online with any address close to the gta (any car) and video tape your jaw drop. My rates are just under 400 a month skyline and 160 on a truck. If i lived where you do i could probably cut those rates in half.Originally posted by gtrjon View PostMy 98 a4 1.8T is $29 a month in Washington and my bnr32 is $175 a month in bc! I dont understand how some of you guys can justify the $400-$600 a month that you say you are paying. Yes i love my gtr but anything over $250 a month and i would seriously reconsider.

I'm just going to go ahead and call b.s. on that one.Originally posted by RixR32 View PostIllegal.
I really hate when young people try to pull this one, especially with Skylines......sorry, not trying to be rude but this does not HELP our insurance rates...
Rick
My information comes from the RIBO (Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario), who told me when I was in the market for insurance last year that as long as the driver is covered on the vehicle, primary or secondary, it does not matter if the secondary driver uses it 99% and the "registered" owner uses it 1%.
To call me wrong is to call them wrong... I got this from them... so I'll leave it at that... but I also don't understand why you would attack anyone for finding a simple solution such as using their parents? Would you rather they drive without insurance and then really affect your rates when they get caught and statistics for Skyline owners change drastically in Ontario?
I look forward to your response.

Love it. Best daily I've owned.Originally posted by Spencer87 View PostHow do you like the Pajero? I was thinking about getting one as a daily (loving my legacy GT right now - especially with all the snow fall Toronto/Greater Toronto Area's been hit with but I keep coming back!)
4wd, 7 passenger, SUV that gets 30 mpg.....
Not gonna win any drag races, but it pulled my 23 ft boat just fine...

It's not justification, but Ontario. If you're not on one of the specialty vehicle plans, that's what you're generally looking at paying. Justify? It lets me legally have a Skyline on the road... is that justification or an excuse? :POriginally posted by gtrjon View PostI dont understand how some of you guys can justify the $400-$600 a month that you say you are paying.

I almost didnt post as Im extremely paranoid when it comes to my insurance on my skyline but I wanted to stress keep searching and circle back, even to companies that said no last month. When I first got her I was with Facility (high risk insurance for those who cant get insured) for 400/mth. I took it but I kept looking - I ended up getting a policy (full coverage, registered as a daily) for under 200 a month. Their not offering new policies, otherwise I would feel more comfortable sharing more - I can't even get a second RHD vehicle on the policy at the same time (one would need to be parked) but even that scares me - I've read a few stories with others who had in writing that they could get their skyline back on the road in the spring but when spring came, a different tune was sung. Whether this was true or not, I can't say but with the current state of insurance, I hardly find it worth the risk (a reason I leave my skyline on full coverage all year round).

This!! I think these last two posts pretty much sum up why I am not driving an R32 right now and instead an RSX. The Fact that people even have RHD cars insured under their parents is just wrong, what happens when you ditch it and file a report? Surprise, daddy wasn't driving it, instead his 16 year old son has. I personally had the option to have an R32 under my dad's name but after long and hard consideration we decided that was just a bad idea. Having young people (me included I'm an 18 year old full time student) driving around in RHD cars insured under others can only negatively impact the public's view on these wonderful cars, when one is crashed by said young man/woman.Originally posted by S13Jordie View PostCouldnt agree more. I was lucky to have lived out of toronto when i had my car on the road. My policy under MY name only cost me 84 a month with desjardins. They wouldnt insure the car when i moved to toronto. I am banking on classic car insurance when i put it back on the road. But with more people getting their cars insured through parents or older friends, its only a matter of time before they stop accepting new policies.
For the record, the only RHD car I was ever able to get a reasonable quote for was for a Celica ST205 through Bel-Air, it could have just been a mistake, but I told them it was RHD many times and I was told it was noted. Of course this was with some serious restrictions in terms of the coverage that I was allowed, and of course the premiums where fairly high but not silly.

I'm lucky enough to be able to insure my GTR through LANT's classic policy, or I wouldn't even have one....
BTW my dad is 60, had motorcycles since he was 18, and rates are still sh!t, and for a Kawi cruiser.
Insurance companies here are thieves. Period. But nothing us PAYING citizens can even do about it...
End rant/

What kind of **** is this seriously, you know what a weapon of death is a motor cycle, not a skyline. Something that goes 300 km/h in under 20 seconds without seat belts should not be able to be insured but skylines are this difficult and expensive? Ridiculous. Im sure everyone else has already gone thru this but im just venting, sorry lol. I drive my car under dealer plates but Id like to white plate it. Impossible even under my dads name and me as a second driver for under 750/month even though we both have clean records and driving school.

Mid 30's, no tickets in 4 years, 0 star driver rating due to recent single vehicle collision claim, primary/only vehicle, central toronto, full/comp coverage, high km allowance / long commute (use code 03), $500 deductible.Originally posted by zac3ne2nr View PostDon't he probably has it insured as a hobby car with silver wheels or another carrier under which there are a slew of driving limitations.
I pay 130/yr for that type of coverage.
Daily insurance if you can find it, was costing me about 800/mth with a perfect record, 30, no claims and other regular cars currently insured.
600$/ month.
