  • Insurance Bible for ONTARIO (Greater Toronto Area)

To hopefully put an end to reoccurring and pointless threads, along with the irrelevant comments in them, I am going to put everything that I have learned in the 5 years of "researching" insurance for RHDs into this thread. I can say that while I am a young guy, I have not only been around Skylines since grade school, but my family and I have been in the insurance/collision industry since before I was born. I know this stuff because I am constantly in contact with not only ACTUAL insurance companies and their execs (not rookie salesmen), but just about every forum-dwelling member in Southern Ontario.

So, without further ado, here is the best collection of RHD insurance info for Ontario (SPECIFICALLY THE GREATER TORONTO AREA). Barring an act of God, this info will be as accurate as you'll find. Insurance companies will NEVER voluntarily decide to loosen the stranglehold they have on the RHD market, so companies may decide to cut RHD policies. The only way any of these companies will help the RHD owners out is if they are forced to by the provincial government...if they decide to step in. I just can't see how a government can stand by as companies charge roughly 2-3 times MORE to someone living in ontario, than the same company charging the same "person" (age, car, all details the same) in another province. One of my good friends paid less than half of what our province pays for his skyline....he was 17 and the car was under HIS name....with FULL coverage?!?! for less than $200 a month. That blows my freakin' mind considering Facility would quote someone like him over $600 per month....for LIABILITY ONLY?! come on now

Anyways here we go. Two sections. Under and over 26.

    Over 26

You're in a great spot! Many options.

    - Lant or Hagerty offer collector or "silver wheels" policies (if you have a daily car) for as little as a few hundred dollars per year, full coverage. Appraisal required, sometimes these policies carry KM limits.

    - While a lot of the big insurance companies have cut RHD policies, some still offer them if you have been a previous customer. As of 6 months ago, Allstate and Statefarm insured these cars ONLY if you have a second vehicle with them AND you've been with them for at least 6 months. Rates aren't too bad....comparable to what you'd pay for a newer family sedan (from what I've been told). However, anything other than "decorative" mods are a big no-no (policies will be cancelled).

    - Facility....will always take you. however, age isnt really a factor with them. You pay based on your risk rating (usually your driving record). However, since RHD cars are satanic death machines, you will be looking at upwards of $400 a month for liability only.

-And finally, you have the smaller, "family-owned" sized companies that are usually found by brokers. I know of a few people outside of the gta (otherwise known as the worst insurance area in the country) that are with these smaller companies. Unfortunately, for anyone within an hour of toronto, this is not an option.

    Under 26

    LOL.

I don't mean to sound pessimistic, being as I am 20 myself...but unfortunately there isn't much out there for us. At all.

    - We DO NOT qualify for any collector policy. For those collector policies, you need to have 10 years of licensed driving experience. Whether that period starts when you acquire your G1, G2, or G, I am not sure.

    - Same #2...if you have been with Allstate/Statefarm, take 'er for a boost. You'll pay quite a bit (based on age + RHD).

    - Then we get to facility...heres where my LOL comes in. Upwards of $500 per month for simple liability. However, you wont be turned down due to RHD.

    - The "under a family member" routine. I do this with my daily driver as I cannot afford insurance for the car being under my name. If you do plan to do this, the family member (has to be over 26 for it to make any sense) cannot have a car in their name....its hard to explain. For every car in the house, there has to be a primary driver. Just say there are 3 cars and 3 people in a house. Most insurance companies will argue that each car has to have a primary driver, meaning one person cant own all 3 and have the other two just being secondary drivers. Sometimes this isnt the case as the insured will argue that they are their own cars and not their kids, etc etc.

Heres the stinger I'm sure every kid is thinking, because I have thought of it too, and had very close friends actually DO it to be shut down.

You cannot insure these cars under a parent using a collector policy, and just drive it yourself. Collector policies are strict. Each policy covers ONLY the primary driver. If someone else is caught driving the car, chances of losing your policy are very high. If you're in an accident and you aren't the primary driver, I am pretty sure you won't be covered, as each policy owner signs off on being the sole driver of the car. (you have to write a little short essay for these, its practically like you're interviewing for the policy lol)

I hope I have been of some assistance. I would like to stress once more that posting comments about how cheap your insurance is is completely irrelevant and does nothing to help the people that are looking for this info. No province is the same as what us in the Greater Toronto Area are going through.....Jeesh, even people IN ontario (outside of the GTA) pay peanuts compared to us.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment here or PM me. I don't know EVERY single companies procedures regarding RHD vehicles, so I have only commented on the ones I do know about (which still covers most of whats out there).

    Happy motoring.

I'm 19, i live in Ajax which is 30 mins east of toronto. I pay $780/month through facility. I have my G and no tickets, completely clean record. Nothing i can do, it was a struggle to even get this far. Having to get a $200 appraisal just to be looked at was the start.

Oh my sweet jebas! 780 a month??
I live in bonerville, I grew up in Ajax, and my skyline is insured with the Ajax State Farm office on hardwood ave, across from staples, and it's 230

Screw the 200$ appraisal, invest in a fake birth certificate that says your over 26, and switch companies!

-anyways. Good thread good info thanks for posting. Perhaps even sticky worthy!

Definitely sticky worthy.. Ill remember to share it with anyone who bugs me about the "hows" of my insurance policy.

I can say the only thing I've noticed different is the Collector Policy. My family has been doing that to keep premiums low for myself and my sister as we've grown up and when she was in an accident less then a year ago in a car she wasn't a primary driver for (and she dailied it), she was still covered and no questions asked. Still has the same policy to this day. Maybe the State Farm my family deals with is a little bit more laid back but we didn't run into any problems.

Thank You! This should certainly be stickied. This should the be all and end all of insurance discussion in Ontario in major populated locations. I can tell you its the exact same in Ottawa, though are rates are slightly lower.

not sure how 800/ month is justifiable. that's close to a mortgage payment.

Regarding the strict limitations here is a sample of the RUW- Restricted Use Warranty. (see the last post)

                Appraisals
1:You will need at least one to register and they're different. While Lant does not require an appraisals and only pictures and an honest description providing one did not hurt. I had one done by a professional guy known in the industry, comes to you etc for 180 incl HST. They may or may not use that as their insured value.

2:The second appraisal is now required by MTO to register a vehicle older than 20years. This may not apply to you and has to be done by an approved MTO garage on their silly yellow form. It's $15 and the garage can put value $40 and your RST tax is based on that. go figure. _ this brings to front another issue. If you buy a car for cheap RHD or LHD and fix it up and then get it appraised you're SOL. BTW you can't even get a temp plate without the appraisal which is a loop. How will you take it to the MTO shop in the first place? anyway that's another issue.

Modifications , Mileage and Lant's insurance.
Doreen at Lant was very knowledgeable and answered any questions I had. It is better to disclose all mods to them. They are not lenient but rather it is something taken into account in their policies and they don't have a problem.
With mileage it was casually mentioned that less than 120 000km is better when applying for a policy.

GTR would be the last car on my list to own if insurance was $800/month. Wow.

I feel like a terrible person paying $84/month.

Its my dream car, if i waited till i was 26 there wouldn't be any left, I have no bills im still living with the rents. I had to get two appraisals, the cheap one for change of ownership and then another professional one for my insurance broker. Statefarm won't insure me, unless i get a second car(which i will) ^^^^^And the no temp plate thing was ******* stupid^^^^^ lol if anyones looking to buy one of these cars feel free to question me, as far as worst case scenarios go you can't do any worse than me unless you have tickets. One thing to know is that facilities rates are concrete....so they say. I called 20 or more brokers and they all gave me different rates. Anyways thats my situation, any ideas?

youre 19, sell the GTR and put your money towards school or a house. Damn 10K a year for insurance on a 20+ year old car sounds like a solid investment.

Great post Ryan. Only thing to add is from my exprience, most of Ontario is similar to the GTA when it comes to RHD. At least as far as GETTING a policy is concerned. Rates MAY be lower if/when you find coverage.
I jumped thru all the hoops to insure my 94 Paj as a normal daily just to pay $105/month for full coverage. Wifes '12 mazda3 is 107.
Company based that on a 12500 appraisal combined with a 1994 montero risk rating.
It does help if your JDM has a NA twin. Unfortunatly that does us no good here....

Yes I agree Rick. Finding the policy will be tough province-wide, however rates seem to be cheaper outside of the major metropolitan areas. Look at bignate for example...pays less insuring 3 RHDs than most of us do with just one (in Toronto)....AND hes under 25 haha.
