  • coilpacks...

I was looking over the list of mods i had compared to everyone else, and everyone seems to have gone aftermarket coilpacks. so i was did some research and came to the conclusion that they are somewhat necessary to maintain a strong spark and prevent blowout. but which ones are the best? there is currently a group buy for the yellow jackets coil packs going on and i think i might jump on that bandwagon, but for some reason im leaning more towards buying a set of Splitfires. which ones are better? or if there is another brand better than both those please let me know. and im not too sure but it seems like a relatively small mod, but does it require a full retune after installation?

I went with yellowjackets and have had them on my car for more than 9 months now without any problems. And I didn't even have to retune the ecu or anything, just installed them and drive. If you want to save some money, go with the yellow jackets but if you want to prestige, then use splitfires.

I'm doing the same research. Conclusion: if your OEM are doing the job, there's no need to swap them( but how the heck do you test them?).

        2) Yellowjacket say that he got +10 whp. The only dyno sheet I saw was a +2whp increase.

But I think if you go with a boost controller and higher boost, then an AM coilpack is more worth it.

all i know is, 18-19 year old coilpack might fail anytime,
so i went with Splitfires i got through Ztune's groupbuy a while back

it was mostly to try to cure my boost drop above 6000rpm
so after so research, i'm swapping the 3 most likely culprits; coilpack, bovs, boost controller

with these 3 brand new items, on same boost, i should get an extra 20whp

            VERY simple...
Pull the coil harness off. Take an ohm meter and put the (+) to (+) and the (-) to (-). They are clearly marked on the top of each coil.
They should be about .7 ohms.
Keep in mind there are MANY cases of high HP cars using oem coil packs.
That being said I had a miss under boost, car would usually go into limp mode, checked codes, said I had an ignition circuit problem, tested coils, impedence was 1 ohm to high and bought Splitfires. Haven't tried them yet.

Where is the group buy for these coilpacks? I think I may be looking to invest.

Many highly tuned cars in Japan use OEM coils. Aftermarket are not really needed.
However, if you are interested in going aftermarket we do sell the Splitfires for 54,000 JPY (retail is 68,000 JPY).

thx Bobbo, il go test them sometime this week.

It's weird i feel so incomplete and kinda retarded for completely overlooking the coilpacks. almost worried even, but then again, Ive thrown 31psi at my motor without a problem... we'll see.

                    I'll let you know Daryl!

i've gone through OEM 18 coil pack basically a set every year. Begining of the year i can run lots of boost no problem, by the end of the year i'm turning boost down because the spark is not strong enough to keep the spark plug lit and it sounds like a bee*r limiter going off here and there. So i'm fed right up and dropping the cash on some yellow jackets.

They should be about .7 ohms.

The ohm test tests the resistance of the coil, but in our experience, doesn't always exactly relate to the voltage output for the plug. We use a coil tester for that.

If your stock coils are getting tired, replace them with new OE Nissan ones, Splitfires, Yellow Jackets, etc. Don't expect Yellow Jacket/Splitfire to give you more power over brand new OE, they probably won't. A strong, clean spark just prevents missfires under high boost. But if your old coils are weak, then yes, you may get some lost power back.

FYI, brand new Splitfires in stock, in Canada, $415CAD!

For $400 just get the new ones my friend. Anything under the hood of our cars (especially the coil packs) see so many heat cycles that they fatigue. Buying certain things RIGHT once is cheaper then having to do it twice.
Talk to the boys at ZTune IMO.
