  • sorry guys was just reading through J's build thread as i know he runs biggggg rims and tires.... read from the point where he got the new SSR's...

    18x10 + 18... running -3 camber!!!

I am looking to put a stock airbox back in my IMPUL, if anyone has one in Calgary they want to get rid of for cheap let me know. Paul

    still open for input!

      ok, engineer speaking here

why would it be different for a 17 or 18'' rim?
the important thing to know is whats wider (rim or tire) and the TOD (total outer diameter) regardless of the rim diameter

so his 275/40/r17 tires have a 651,8mm TOD

      while your 265/35/r18s have a 642,7mm TOD

and his tires are larger than your tires or rims

meaning hes got bigger wheels overall

even if hes running -3def of camber, it doesn't really change anything about the fitment since both of you don't have slammed cars with wheels sitting insinde the fenders (like VIP style cars)

and an offset of +40 is the same for any manufacturer, its not like a thread wear rating for a tire, +40 is always +40mm from the center of the rim, thats a fact its like a 5x114,3 bolt pattern, its the same for everyone

so basically hes got a more agressive fitment setup that works

thats why most people that buy brand new wheels for their GTR go for +12 to +22mm of offset since most of the time its looks much better and sits flush (vertically) to the wide GTR fenders without sticking out (but it will on a GTS)

i respect you and all archaeic, but IMO you didn't talk to the right people and/or didn't do your math right

9'' or 9,5'' wide rims with 255~275mm wide tires with an offset between +12 and +22 will fit perfectly (regardless of the rim's diameter) on non-slammed GTR

if your +40 rims fit well with 20mm spacers, you could have just bought +20 rims without using spacers, and it would have been exactly the same fitment, but probly looked better (deeper spoke concavity)

and since your using extended studs, you could have just used extended nuts (like my new rays ''long type'' nuts) or ''straight through'' nuts

in my case, i don't have enough cash to buy brand new rims, so i'm still using my Work Emotions CR Kai 17x9

i bought them used, and they came off an S14 silvia, so the offset was for a RWD car, +38 (x2) and +28(x2)

which makes my rims sit well insinde the fenders,

      so i bought bolt-on spacers, a pair of 25s and a pair of 15s

      meaning my offset will be;
      +38 -25 = +13
      +28 -15 = +13

so i'll have a +13 offset for all 4 wheels with 255mm wide rubber on them

and everything will fit without any problems at all

......and 275mm is the accepted maximum for a 9'' rim, but its doable

      • lol yes, francois chiming in.. knew it wouldnt be long...haha (i love a good debate)

well in response to the engineer thing, ill respond by saying i'm a physicist... one month from getting my degree completed.

i actually agree with everything you said,...... i looked into it and you're right about the offsets being the same from all companies... my bad, bad source on that one...

except i don't get your "Total Outter Diameter" measurements... what exactly are you saying has a measurement of 650mm?... thats 65 cm! thats huge.. lol what is that? i think your calculating there the total rolling diamater no? correct me if im wrong on that..

but thats not my issue.. my issue has to do with the Width... ill snap some photos in a few days but my car is low enough that IF i were to add like a 25mm spacer, the tire would definitley rub on the fender.. thats the issue, and when you get the bigger offsets with wide rims.. thats why people do those 2 things which i don't like very much..

        1) run crazy negative camber
        2) roll the fenders

and as to why i bought rim with high offset is because i already had the 60mm extended nismo studs and spacers.... and i happened to find these in MTL... in prefect condition.. they met a lot of my requirements so i settled on the offset thing. same as you i guess you know what its all about..

anyways, back to the subject.. please counter to my statement about width etc.

        • lol.... engineer or not, trying to justify putting +40 offset wheels on a gtr is lame.

and no.. offset is not different from manufacture to manufacture... "18x10 +12mm" is exactly what is says it is, 18 inches, by 10inches, +12mm offset, Volk does not use a different "mm" than SSR.

i run 18x10+12 on mine, JBNR32 runs 18x10.5+15 on his, looks awesome.

and i didnt say CIVIC, i said honda... NSX, S2K ring a bell?

point is, the low offset versions of the SSR Type C's looks 1000x better than the crap flat faced ones with high offset, same with your old TE37's.

but if you like it then thats cool. im just saying

          • also you can run way larger then 275 on a 9 inch wide rim, we had put 275-35-15 hoosier r6 slick on a 6.5'' wide rim(stock integra type-r) the tire we're bulky but give us 1 inch wider, But most manufacturer will tell you to stick with a 9'' max for a 275 i.e falken.

Also archaeic, nice to see another nice build in montreal region!

            • i'm correct about the TOD, take a tape measure you'll see, 65cm isn't that big

              the formula is simple

              (width)*(profile ratio)/100*2 + (diameter)*25.4 = TOD

and about width, from this picture i don't see your tire rubbing inside the fender anytime soon, even with a 25mm spacer

              • @fracnois.... k TOD understood... got that. look the rims in that photo has the concave-ness we mentioned before.. so i think that looks good as a rim itself.. but maybe i could put a spacer to bring it out like a few more mm. as for rubbing... from the side is where you'll see it, its about 2 fingers width away... but i mean also look at that pic again, you can perfectly see what i mean about the rubber sticking out...

what do you guys think about fitting a nismo rear spat and side skirt to maybe cover the rubber a bit better? or maybe a TBO side skirt?

@ Canu.... LOL omg thats insane man...hahaha while it may be possible to do that, im sure that handles weird.. and looks funny..lol id like to see a photo if you got one? but you're point is solid.. that rim size has little affect on which tire size you can run, i get your point... and ya i guess i agree. ya MTL FTW.. except for that stupid Line Beauchamp woman whos talking about making it manditory for vehicles older than 15 years to pass emissions and safety tests... again... FU<K! whos that law aimed at eh? stupid....

@ Derk..... yo i totally agree that when you can run big rims, with big tires and a sweet offset like +18 that looks good, but my argument is simply that in order to run that settings you must use big camber, and roll the fenders...

what camber are you running to fit your setup? can u post some photos? and did u roll the fenders?

guys,... i do agree that a super flush fitment looks good, but i don't wanna run mad camber cause then that makes the rubber stick out at the bottom and like i said before make stones fly up and chip the paint....

so what ill most likely do guys... is measure with some vernier calipers, how many more mm i could push the wheel out (ill take a photo of that) and then ill get some spacers on the rear as well, but i really don't thnk ill be able to run more than like a +8mm spacer honestly....

maybe i could squeeze a +12 and then have the camber set to like -1.9... im currently at -1.7

now just to be clear.. my fronts are effectivley +20... so those are kosher eh? lol

                thoughts?

                • I don't have any picture of the slick on rim, we did that to try because we got beaten by 1/10 of a second by a guy running 275 and we were running 225, the feeling is akward, because you have to do all the opposite of what you learn tracking a car, you really need to push it, then it grip then it want to go even more.

                  • Rear wiper delete looks clean! And i'm definitely loving those minty fresh rims.. Very nice man!

About the whole offset issue; i wouldn't say HONDA Rim's.. as a GTST is stock with +40 offset.. The obvious route is to go with a proper offset off the bat, but spacers aren't a crime. He's achieving the exact stance and look he desires by other means - not to mention he got these rims for a killer deal and with the condition they're in, could easily resale for nearly double the value... I saw this car with his TE37's and i must say the stance was excellent for a +40. If he can achieve the same, which im assuming he will, the car will look +20, +15 ish.. Flush. Looks great IMO.. I dont particularly care about offset if the price is right, there's always a way around the whole issue, not to mention these rims have a nice flow to them, not flat faced like the TE's.

                    • LOL thanks for the back up marc haha... but ya you're 100% right on.. why does it matter how you achieve the goal as long as its achieved?

with that in mind, ill probably be adding a +20mm spacer, then dropping the car a little lower.. i did some measuring and ive got the room!!

Anyways.. back to the build! i pulled out the oem stereo amplifier too, i weighed the wiper motor assembly and its not THAT heavy as i thought... together with the wiper arm and the stereo amp though it came in at 9 pounds... so thats alright! lol

so for winter i said i was going to be doing something big, well relativley big, and here is the beginning of it!... i stripped the body panels off.. the hood, bumper, undertray, and corner lights... im going to be removing a lot of the useless stuff from the engine bay, relocating the battery and stuff like that.

i also want to replace the hose clamps and silicone couplers with vibrant perofrmance ones, and install my ARC intercooler...

i want to get rid of the plastic piping thats for the BOV's recirc system.
and depending on how things go.. i might be pulling the motor to give it a refresh.. meaning new hoses, vacuum lines, gaskets etc....

and also i want to re-paint a lot of the suspension members and things like the bumper re-inforcement bar, it seems some of them are in a sore state.. so a refresh on all those parts would serve well too!

but really i have to see how much time i have this winter between school and work im usually pretty busy.

but... needless to say, this is definitley going to get a lot more interesting.

                        • @ NismoS-tune thanks a lot man!!!

well time for another update, i got the car up on jack stands all stable now and positioned.

figured id start by taking off more stuff to clear the way, now i know it seems like im going very slow, and I AM! lol.. im going really slow to make sure i don't lose anything, im labelling every connection, and documenting the process as i go to make re-assembly when its time easy and good.

so, i took out the battery and tray.

Then came off the apexi intakes and the MAF's.. took em off as all one piece

Then i took off the twin turbo top tipe

Then came off the Recirc piping and the Hot upper side of the HKS piping kit

Took off the lower hot side of the HKS piping and the lower part of the Recirc rubber piping

Then the front turbo suction flex pipe

Then finally the rear turbo suction flex pipe, a little bit of oily residue around that bit. ill have a closer look when i get the rest of it off

Next ill be doing some of the lower parts, like i think taking off the exhaust, fender liners, intercooler and remainder of piping.... so much to do! this stuff really does take a lot of time...

guys got any advice as to what would be best to do next?
