Sorry to see the setback. Just curious, did you deviate from the FSM procedure for setting the tensioner in any way?

So yah, bent intake valves...

At least the pistons look OK, no damage I can see.

Tension setting of the cambelt is very critical , especially on an engine where the cams spin up to 4000 rpm or beyond . Pull the head , hopefully its a valve slightly kissing a piston or depending on your camshafts another valve , they will bend easily preventing them seating correctly losing all the compression . Pray you do not have cracked piston crown . valves are easy to fix .
Also check the valves guides to make sure they are not cracked , they are brittle and tend to crack around the bottom if the valve gets sideways stress like this .

I did it with some help from a mechanic friend. Gonna see the extent of the damage and try to rebuild! If just valves won't be too bad.

I know the feeling friend. 4th summer for me with a car in pieces! I lost a newly built engine last time tho.
Who built your engine and set your tension? It's odd there's some skipped teeth GTRs around lately.
What's your plan? Part out and get a faster mustang for less money and warranty?

Thing is I scoped the cylinders and couldn't see any damage to the tops of the pistons, maybe just not enough resolution on the camera. Ah well, leakdown and teardown shall reveal all (I hope).

Unfortunately it is looking like I will not be getting the car on the road this summer
. I got her back together and tried starting, no luck, turned over, coughed a bit and that was it, getting spark and fuel. Checked timing and it had slipped 2-3 teeth. Started doing a compression test and the starter died, so I had to source a new one. Thanks to nismo240r I got a working one, took it apart and gave it a good cleaning and re-installed. On to the compression test.....155, 154, 157, 105, 0, 85
. Repeated cylinders 4,5,6 a couple times to be sure, unless I'm screwing something up looks like she's fooked.
So, leak down test to try to narrow it down a bit more on 4 & 6, and likely fried rings on #5? Damnit.Last edited by ColinR33; 06-10-2013, 11:45 PM.

Yeah. I was searching it up and getting it here was tough then I found a bunch of threads about using the model paint, thought that was a good idea and raided my sons modelling supplies!
