  • Focused Motorsports BNR32

Well this has been long overdue. After 3 years of many posts, questions and searching. I figured it was only fair to create a project thread.

    History
I bought this R32 GTR just over three years ago, sourced by Import Concern. In my search I tried to find a skyline that was mostly stock with lower km. In my case this turned out to be a mistake.

My fresh from 1990 Nissan Skyline arrived in Halifax July 09 with its one Red Recaro, Momo Race steering wheel, and sporting a set of SSR integral rims. I was pleased no body damage, clean engine bay, factory nissan exhaust.
Engine and suspension wise it was complety stock.

    First base line dyno run.

Mid summer I put it up for the first time. Despite my coil packs and clutch failing on the drive home. It made 239whp, 223tq.

Awesome, I love the attention to detail, I wish I could the same overhaul to mine.

Why are you regretting buying a stocker? For the time being I'm loving mine, it's purely me and nothing else.

The only reason I regret buying something stock is because of the huge amount of money that was needed to get it back into proper running condition. Repair work was neglected on my vehicle before it arrived, but I agree it is nice that everything is done the way I want it.

                    Bolt on parts

This is a very good example of what NOT to do when you have a problem.

I had a bad misfire, and at partial throttle it would lean out and fall on its face.

So instead of trouble shooting. I did what any person who reads to much does. Assume they know what it is.

                    Parts list
                    Yellow jacket coil packs.
                    New coil pack harness.
                    Apexi Power intake kit.
                    New Nissan 300zx MAF's
                    550cc injectors
Mines ecu that came with injectors.

Turns out none of this fixed my problem it was simply 02 sensors and boost leaks, but with the new parts
                    and a 3" exhaust. bumped my 239whp and 223tq to 321whp and 283tq

Shortly after this I had an oil pump failure caused by me way over reving the stock pump to 9000rpm. Spun # 5 & 6 rod bearings and destroyed my crank.

The next day the engine was out.

                      Engine Build
I lost the memory card with the pictures, so the only ones I have were taken by friends who helped along the way.

                      Bottom End.

The bottom end was the one thing I didn't put together myself. Simply because like most people I don't have a machine shop in my basement.
So this was sent to Allyn at A & J Automotive in Kingston NS. They are known for building some of the fastest drag cars in atlantic canada, hold numerous NHRA Drag Racing records, and have been doing this since the mid sixties.

These guys are old school not much conversation. I dropped off my bottom end and the only questions they asked was how much boost I was planning to run and that I needed a new crank.

This is what I got back 2 months later.

                      Parts.

                      Wiseco 86.5mm pistons
                      Eagle H-beam rods
                      ACL bearings
                      New N1 crank
                      Nismo oil pump
                      Tomei oil restrictor.
                      N1 Water pump
                      ARP head and main studs.

                      Machine work.

                      Hot Tanked.
                      magnafluxed.
                      Blue printed
                      Over bored by 0.5mm
2 eagle rods machined due poor Q.C
                      Rotating assembly balanced

                      Head Work.

Stripped down, cleaned to remove all bits of spun bearing.
                      2 intake valves replaced
Decked to clean up pitting on quench pads.
                      New valve stem seals
                      Tomei cam cap studs.
Factory exhaust manifolds were port matched to turbo side. (Lots of restriction there.)

                      Cams and turbos arrived.

                      Tomei Type B Pon Cam.

Went with a set of GT2860-5's
Was going to use 2 greddy TD05 16g top mount, but too much fab work involved and had limited time.
Insure when buying these turbos you order the ones for the r32 and not r34 other wise you have to make a new oil return.

Installing the Autobahn88 Dump tubes which by the way Do Not Fit. They should state that a large hammer and a torch may be necessary for installation. (You get what you pay for)

Engine Back in, cams shimmed and installed, new Koyo rad, new tensioner, new idler, and greddy timing belt.

                      All back together

I will post a start up video as soon as I can find it

                          Paint

Time for a colour change and new wheels.

I wanted something different but not too loud. A friend who also is die hard toyota guy lead me to the colour.

                          Before prep

Taken apart and sanded with 800

                          Tapped up

                          Base coat applied

                          2 heavy coats of clear

                          Unmasked

                          Buffing

Because this was painted in a friends garage there was lots of dirt and imperfections. This is where lots of cutting and buffing come in. Lots of sand paper and 40 hrs later

                          Before

Reflection of the roof before cut/buff. Lots of dirt, haze. looks like it was painted in a garage.

                          After

Reflection of same part of roof after buffing. No one would be able to tell who or where the car was painted.

                          Wheel Upgrade.

I found these in the FS section and had to have them.

                          CCW Classics 18x10.5 +17 Advan a048 265 35 18

                          Some fender rolling was required.

                          Almost finished.

                          Paint and wheel completed

wow great job buddy , I actually really like this gtr.Great colour choice I was thinking of doing something similar when I had mine and those wheels were a great choice! If you had that rocket dancer lip I had for sale a while ago it would top it off perfectly.

                            Good job once again!
My car keeps on stealing my money .
