Anyone know what happened this this thing? Hasn't moved from it's spot in a long time (where it's been for the last few years)... Just curious. I feel it's been given up on too

            Hey,
Sorry I missed the thread bump.
The car was buttoned up and running this spring - but with an engine noise that just wasn't right.
Lightspeed tore it down more than once looking for the problem, and finally we agreed that a few miles would help show where the trouble was... It turns out when you bore a block, it's important to bore all the way through. The machine shop had left a .0015" ridge at the bottom of the cylinder that tore up some piston skirts but revealed the issue.
Block is rebored (all the way through), and it's going back together.

You mentioned a "formula car". Do have a Ford, BMW? Where are you running it? I've given serious consideration to picking one up (tremendous value for the fun!) but the field here is small and inconsistent. Even the best party wont be fun if you're the only one showing up.
              Sorry for getting off topic.

I'm running an Arcobaleno. It's a short wheelbase car with a bike power train. Some turn up their nose, but it's a ton of fun.
I've been lapping with half a dozen or so others with the same car, which is fun, and planning to run wheel to wheel at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton with a fairly diverse group of open wheel cars.
I also picked up a Spec Miata to run with a growing local class. Also a fun series. Cheap, safe, competitive = FUN

I'm taking a guess here, but I don't believe the skirt comes out the bottom of the cylinder at BDC on a 2.6L RB26.

I'd be seriously questioning the competency of Lightspeed at this point.

My car is also being worked on at Lightspeed. I have faith Cam will stand up for his work because of his good reputation.

If there was a ridge that the piston skirt does need to pass, this would happen. It doesn't need to come out the bottom of the cylinder.

Cam is standing behind his work, which is appreciated. The timeline is not making anyone happy.

You said they missed boring out the final 1.5 thou at the bottom of the bore. I don't believe the skirt gets within 1.5 thou of the bottom of the bore. What am I missing?

My bad. To clarify, the bore had a 1.5 thou step reducing the diameter at a location the piston skirt needed to occupy.

hmm. seems to me that would be visible with the naked eye and should've been caught before assembly. oh well.

wonder if they used a dummy head/torque plate when they did the machining. The only local machine shop to red deer doesn't use or have one.

                                i don't think i could see a difference of 1.5 thou in a cylinder ...
