  • GTR died on me, any ideas?

On thursday i was driving along when my car just died. I coasted along untill i could get safely off the road. When i tried to restart it the closest i could get was when i had the clutch half out thus putting a load on the engine. So i had it towed home where it sat in my garage overnight. the next morning it started up like a champ and was idling beautifully so i drove it to work. about two blocks before i got there it did the same thing to me. I have managed to start it a few times with just the right amount of throttle but the second i let off it dies.

As far as my current diagnosis has gone: I have fuel pressure, (not measured but i just hooked up a long hose from my fuel filter and she's flowing nicely), my electrical connections all seem fine, and i was driving with no cam gear cover for a while and got alot of water in the "valley" between my cams, it was filled up to the top of the coil holes on a few pistons so i cleaned all the water out and dried it up.

I'm convinced it is something sensor or ignition related (possibably an ignitor?) or the water fried my coils somehow (splitfires). I will look into it a bit more tomorrow when i have time but i'm just wondering if anyone else has had similar symptoms or any better diagnostic tips for me.

    Thanks
    Greg

So it dies when you give it throttle?

    Regardless of speed, or rpm?

nope, it dies when i let of the throttle. it only seems to fire up with just the right amount of throttle and will stay running as long as i keep giving it enough, but the second i let off it will die.

              Greg,
I take it the symptoms are different from here. http://forums.gtrcanada.com/showthread.php?t=35136

Bad MAF would be a spot to look. I had one that cut out periodically and the only was I could keep the engine running when this was happening was to pump the gas continually. (Enrichment made up for excess air the ECU didn't know about.)

I've got two known good ones in my trunk for the purpose of loaning out to troubleshoot.

Drop me line if you want to try these ones.

yeah it was different then last time, lol. i just had to plug the ignitor in properly last time. i'm going to test out my ignitor tonight and i might end up meeting up with you to take a look at the mafs.
                thanks dan

Let me know if you need any thing to test with Greg.

My car is oddly having the EXACT same problem but on an rb20. I'm very interested to see what is causing this, its more than likely the same thing for me. When mine does it, I smell gas after so I can think that it isnt a fuel related issue, more like not getting spark.

I've seen two cars die like that and refuse to start up etc because of a bad fuel filter now... It's weird, but it happens. Remember it's 15 years old lol!

It's something to change, and it's cheap :P

Maybe the throttle body is closing to much and not letting in enough air so it chokes the engine out?

no, even manually controlling the trottle bodies dosn't make a difference
