  • Good Diff ? Bad Diff ?

I have complained since day 1, ever since I bought my car, that it gets SNAKEY WAY too fast on acceleration......and have blamed the Rear Diff from the beginning.

When I bought my car, it was listed as having an upgraded 2-way rear diff, but nothing other than that.

Either I have to adjust my driving style, or get a more friendly Rear Diff because today was pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back.

    To set the mood......in Calgary.
HOT TIRES (around 100km today), then Blackfoot trail North to Deerfoot South offramp. Enter corner at around 80-90k in 3rd, let off at about 4000 RPM in 3rd to negotiate corner (nice sweeping 90deg left).....and the ass end starts locking up around the corner and chirping, making the car studder and come sideways. Near FRESH, SMOOTH AS BABY'S ASS WARM PAVEMENT.

Is this Diff worn out ? or just locks up TOO QUICKLY in both accel and decel ?

I had to get back into the throttle to bring the car back in line, while trying hard not to run into my usual sideways-acel problems that I have had with this diff.

How can I tell if this thing is adjustable at all ? ...and what good is a Diff that locks up so quickly both ways ? Ex-Drift car perhaps ? (the car was quite STRIPPED when I bought it, as in there was ALOT more in it before I got it and have the electrical lines and dead ended Oil gauge lines etc to prove it, as well as unmatched-BALD rear tires).

With only 300HP at the wheels, this car feels about as stable some days as my old 375HP LT-1 SBC Powered S-10 truck.

    Ideas ?

    Thanks.
    Allan

do you still have the stock front diff?
It will cause the car to pull hard to the right on accel.

I Have a Nismo 2 way out back that is set at max preload and i don't experience what you are explaining. Sure the back likes to come out but I have to push it very hard.

When was the last time you had an alignment?

I just had it aligned a few months ago and had all outer TRE's replaced before hand.

Would the Diff being worn out be causing this ?

I've got stock everything and have never had any pulling or tires locking up. Especially on good pavement if that helps.

It more like 1 wheel getting dragged (inside wheel).......kinda like what happens when doing a 3-point turn in a muscle car w/POSI ? know what I mean ?.......

Yup, put a 4x4 in 4L and try to take a nice paved corner. Definatly sounds like you have a wheel trying to lockup. Should do it on HARD accel or decel but I've never heard of it locking up in a corner...

2ways will lock up alot on accel and decel...they are predictable but not friendly for every day driving due to your example of what happened on the road

Did you rev match on your down shift? Miss the rpms by a bit? When you're going in a corner so fast you're on the brink of losing control, a couple hundred RPM miss can make a difference

I was off the throttle and had shiffted down prior to entering. It was about half ways through the corner while coasting that this happened.......

It wasn't a matter of compression - just dif lockup I think.

I consider a 2 way perfectly fine on the street.

Let's not forget that you think a 4508R on a stock stroke motor is going to be great on the street. What's good for you or him isn't necessarily good or streetable for everyone.
