  • Help.. Overheating etc...

    This just started...

    - Rough idle, I thought because of a huge exhaust leak in my downpipe.
    -Oil temp climbing past half
    -Coolant overheating and bubbling.

As soon as I noticed the coolant gauge start to climb above half, I parked the car. What do you suggest???

    Thanks,
    Getting Frustrated GTR owner!!!!

Have you bled your coolant system yet?

No I haven't, but it was working great for the last 2 months?? It is getting so hot that it is bubbling out the overfill cap? Now I am low on coolant. I checked for leaks but couldn't find any? How can I check my rad fan? Could that do it?

Good thinking. Is the thermostat located right under the the injectors?

Where does the coolant gauge ( inside the car ) get it's reading from?? The thermostat or a sensor, before or after the thermostat?

im pretty sure that the sensor for the gauge in the car takes its readin after the thermostat.. in fact, im pretty sure it takes the reading either from inside the rad. or just near where the upper rad hose attaches.

they suggested checking your oil for "milky" because that would have indicated a blown head gasket.

which over heats first? the oil? or the coolant? if the oil over heats first.. chances are you've got a bottom end issue... if its the coolant, probably jammed thermostat, or blown water pump... you had yours replaced yet?

usually its water pump time after 100,000 km's

No I haven't replaced the thermostat or water pump. The oil was sitting at 1/2 on the gauge while the coolant started creeping up. Then the oil went a little higher. With a water pump, is it possible to get rough idle and boiling coolant?? The oil looked ok on the dip stick and smelled ok. Also after idle, it is sputtering until I get up to 3000 rpm and then runs fine through the gears?? *** This started after I have a good highway drive*** not sure if that makes a difference

do a compression test and will be enough to tell you if it is or not

what else could it be?? I have never seen a car with a blown head gasket leak coolant from an exhaust leak?? The coolant is still Green and oil still brown??? No mixing from what I can see??

Someone may have opened up your exhaust ports a little too much. There's a coolant passage right by the exhaust port that you can come too close to if you're not careful.

Look at McFly's web site for some pix of a sectioned head.

Headgasket (even a metal headgasket) can leak from cylinder to watergallery on RB26. The result is engine runs rough at idle. Long trips, like on motorway can show up a headgasket leak. Dropping coolant level is another symptom. Like what was said above, do a compression test to rule this out.

Only other place that I can think of, for a leak to happen, is turbo's. With white cloud of smoke, it sounds like a blown oil seal on back of turbo. But doesn't explain the coolant problem.
