  • Transmission tear down

Im about to take apart my transmission to take a peak at the gears and find out exactly whats in it. Just wondering what the process is for taking it apart. should i be taking the transfer case end off first?

my suggestion would be to take a look at the factory service manual.

If you take off the front bell housing piece it will expose some gears

I think he had route 6 gear set written down on the build list. It will be pretty hard to tell the difference if there is no markings though. Maybe the tooth count is different?

Dont tear it apart unless your going to change it if it isnt what you want. Just get it running and figure out the gear ratios by figuring out your speeds at a set rpm. Then work backwards and see what tranny you have.

Theres a write up in my build thread for the RB20. Having seen them both, there really isn't much of a difference in terms of pulling them apart. It takes about 10 minutes. Just make sure you have some RTV to seal it back up afterwards. Pay close attention to not mess with the gear selection.. Otherwise getting the shift linkage in the proper place upon reinstallation is going to be a bit of a pain, and you'll have to backtrack the gears you selected.

Check out the GTST Projects page and keep up to date with my build!

Aye, ratios aren't a huge deal, even if your speedo reads a little off, it can be modified. My final drive is different too so it's not big deal

Are you running the 4.3 out of the gts4? I can imagine that would make an already fast GTR just that much faster.

Tranny gears dont make your speedo read off. He wants to pull his tranny just just to see what is inside.

Im saying he doesnt need to go threw all the effort. Just see what your speedo reads at whatever gear and rpm. You compare it to stock. You can figure out your ratios that way without taking your tranny apart

Huh? And wouldn't most likely lose my top end if I did that, barf.

You will loose a whole 12mph, you can still top out at 170mph, plenty fast.

I will be doing this as soon as I find a matched set of gears, want to be doing ~140mph at the top of 4th. Right now I only use about 600rpm in 4th at the end of the 1/4mile, want to take it to 8000 instead of 7200.

Another bonus is the tranny will take a bit more abuse because you have lowered the torque load on it with the shorter gears in the diffs.

The sheet said route 6 transmission. I am mainly taking it apart to redo the synchros. Thanks for all the input.
