  • Something bad happened!!

Ok so my skyline is my dd and today while driving home I heard a bang coming fromthe back so I Pulled over on the highway and there was what looked like oil but smelled really bad leaking out right after the drive shaft but before the rear transfer. First q is what is that and second what could have happened?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Is it gtr? Not sure what happened maybe rear diff blew, maybe just the seal, I have a full rear diff maybe for sale, was it drive able after? If its gtr could be the atessa unit above the diff, or just a hose

Yes it's a gtr also I thought maybe it was hydrolic fluid from attesa but the only diagram I could dint wasn't very helpful. What comes right after the driveshaft?

Check for a hole on your pumpkin. I have seen and heard it happen before where the diff would fly apart inside and kill the diff housing making a giant hole slightly smaller than a fist. But I doubt this would happen unless you were putting it under extreme load(like a hard launch)

Another thing, is your Gtr stock? Some people change final drive gears and don't change the rest of it which will also help grenade a diff/trans

Was it drive able after? Sounds like a burst hose to me but j just got my gtr, don't know much about em, never heard of it happening before either, but if your lucky, that's what it is, not sure how much oil would come out of a rear diff if it was just the seal, was it more of a popping sound? If it was rear diff it would be noticeable, and probably not drive able after. I'm not even sure how much pressure is actually in these atessa units .

i take it you got it towed home? do you have sccess to a lift? if not and its just sitting in the drive way start it up and with the engine running, see if you can pu it in gear without forcing anything. if you can the tranny is probably fine and its the rear diff.

I'm banking it's the rear diff! The tranny shouldn't make a huge bank like that. When people are really giving it to these cars the diff can blow. This is what puts the power to the wheels.

Here let's make this easier to find out what it is. What speed were you doing when it happened, did you launch it and we're you trying to slide it? The answer to this could make things pretty easy to sum up

                        I doubt it's drivable.

Well, I don't really mean driveable, but does it move , might still drive fine But atessa might not work, maybe light would be on , idk but if the diff had blew it probably wouldnt move at all, or want to

When saying that it's definitely mechanical. If the line blew you would have had a light come on for the awd. Inspect the rear end and if you see the boots on the axles are still decent and you see nothing to be bad then you know it's the diff. I bet you'll need to replace it. When you do please take pics!
