  • Who can tell me what happened here?

    My skyline GTR was recently at my tuner getting a clutch switch fitted to operate the flat foot shifting on the Haltech. while the tuner was testing it, he said that the engine made a grinding noise and lost compression in 4,5 and 6. we opened up the head and saw the compressor wheels of BOTH turbos were damaged:



    how did both turbos get damaged if they each have a separate nismo induction?
    and what could have got past the filters and into the turbo comp housing?

    The exhaust wheels are fine

      Is the screen on the mafs still intact?

        they're stock turbos, been running for a long time and theres almost no play on the shafts. The Mafs are still intact and theres no foreign obects in the filters or induction piping

          Congratulations, you hit VTEC. Usually only supercars like Bugatti Veyron and anything built by Honda have this amazing feature.

              Lol okay okay, im just trying to figure out what happened so it doesnt happen again, otherwise im just wasting money. Could the flat foot shifting cause this in anyway? Because when he was testing the WOT shifting, thats when everything when south

                I think intake airleak (dust), dust entering turbo's (due to bad airfilters) can damage edges of blades like that when they are at speed. With one turbo more damaged than the other, that's what I think happened.

                Probably cheaper to replace engine with Nur R34GTR engine -



                Probably can swap your manifolds, etc (fit R34 CAS) to that engine and fit new turbo's (or make stock turbo's into hybrid stock turbo's so they bolt on and use stock intakepiping, etc).

                  Thanks for the informative read Skym. The block and pistons are fine, its just the valve seats that were damaged and so the valves werent sealing. The head is already being repaired so i dont need a new engine. i'm actually looking into repairing the standard turbos with steel wheels as the turbo shop will charge 1/3 of the price of GT2860's

                      I have nismo induction, nismo intercooler, decat and catback exhaust system and a Haltech Platinum pro ecu. Everything else is stock

                          Nope, I've been to a few tuners and no one can explain what happened. Maybe one turbo sucked in something and the it got ricirculated by the dump valves, into the other turbo?

                              Which is the rear turbo? I'd guess the right one pictured where it was 4,5, & 6 that lost compression and appears to have the worst damage.
                              Any more info on engine damage, valves ect.?
                              Very interesting.
                              BTW I love S.A. been there twice.
