Most whining I've seen/heard has come from the side bearings in Nissan rear diffs. Mainly the Titan, but I would think any diff can suffer the same issue.
Usually the only way to diagnose is to open the diff and inspect it or take it to a driveline shop.

I think I will open em up this weekend and look for unnatural wear on the gears.

I have the exact same problem with my R32. Does it sound like a straight cut gear box or a supercharger? I replaced the front diff with a quaife ABT and oem bearings. It's still there. I noticed the ring gear looked worn, at the time I didn't have time or money left to find a new one. You can pull the 4wd fuse just to make sure it's its from the front diff, but you already sound pretty sure. Good luck.

From what I understand, if used too thick oil for diffhead, it can close the clearances between gears, etc too much and cause whining. Same whine problem if you overshim a diffhead (excessive clunking is the opposite, where there's more play). Check the oil type ??w?? on bottle and compare to factory oil recommendation ??w??.

Good idea thanks skim! Maybe ill try using the using the recommended fluids in the diffs and see how that works.
