  • So there goes 3rd gear....

So as some might know, I spent this last evening at my local drag strip. After having three pretty decent runs of 11.7s / 11.8s / 12.0s, I let my car relax for a few runs and on the fourth run, (which was looking very promising to break my goal of 11.5) I blew third gear.

Really nice launch and smooth roll out of the clutch with minimal wheel spin, bang into 2nd and I guess I just shifted way too fast into third because as soon as I dumped the clutch it felt like all of third completely sheared smooth. I still have a fully working 1st 2nd 4th & 5th and drove the car home approx 50kms after the night.
I can litterally sit at idle or any rpms for that matter and put the car into and out of third gear without the clutch engaged!

It sounds like all the bits from the third gear are rattling around in the gearbox, I don't know a whole lot about gearbox's so I'm not entirely sure what really could have happened but I will find out when I open it up. In the meantime, I've already found another transmission that I'm buying in a day or two to replace this one.

I'm posting this mainly because I'd like some opinions on what my options are here. Ill be clear now, I'm not a typical drag junkie, I only like to run a couple times a year so I will NOT be looking at PPG, Hollinger, or OSG. I cannot do the 5k+ for a transmission right now. From now on I'm going to slow my shifts a bit to give the tranny a break on the track, I'm really lucky I didn't do any worse damage other than just a gear.

So any suggestions? Any price quotes you might know of? Post your info please!!
For reference, the cars making 500whp planted with a nismo super coppermix twin plate.

    Cheers,
    Brent.

They are usually designed (design limit) to take a certain amount of torque (usually up to 20% above factory engine torque figures). Above that torque level the lifespan of the 3rd gear is reduced (replace gearbox often or upgrade the internals with thicker, stronger gears to take more torque) if thrashing car. If going to be drag racing, minimum I would refresh with race spec bearings (is an option for stock R34 GTR gearbox, but not sure about R32, R33 stock GTR gearbox). Another option is powerglide with custom bellhousing.

Nismo mention the bigger, stronger teeth part here (upgraded internals) -

A good stock gearbox that bolts in would be I think is a Series 2 R33 GTR gearbox, as had the dual synchro option in some gears (search).

Another option is the R34 GTR Getrag gearbox conversion kit -

Gives a shorter ratio in lower gears which would be suited to drag racing (helps with acceleration).

Those would be nice parts to have! Unfortunately I can't do the approx $10k for this nismo getrag 6speed, ill have to do a bit of searching, but has anyone heard up swapping gears from a different vehicle that may be stronger?
I would say I was probably thrashing it a bit too hard when it broke, I was really pushing my car on this run when it snapped.

Too bad you're on the other side of the country, I have a factory gearbox in my garage as a replacement. As for the beefed up internals, wait for Dragonhumper to chime in

I would think since can use the 300ZX rebuild kit on R32 GTR stock gearbox, the 300ZX internals (or 350Z) might fit???

But is a rwd gearbox, so output shaft might not work??

Powerglide into R32 GTR has been done -

It produces around 800hp at the wheels -

You can buy the Powerglide transmission adaptor kit for RB26 to Powerglide transmission -

ATI Transmission Adapter kits allow Ford, Chrysler and import owners to also benefit from GM transmissions by eliminating hours of expensive modifications necessary to mate GM transmissions with non-GM engines. Kits include an ATI adapter plate, crank adapter, flexplate, and all necessary mounting hardware.

Lol......^^^and thanks Skym, I most likely will go Powerglide if I can't find an affordable setup to go with my R4C clutch. Do you know who is making the transfer case adapter for the 'glide?

Well....really, the only option you have without spending about $4000 is to just keep buying used boxes out of mostly stock cars and fill it with heavy Shockproof. I'm on season #4 with my trans and have run sub 11sec with it, but I am really carefull shifting into 3rd, to the point that I could knock a good .5 sec off my ET if I wasn't so carefull.

There is a Getrag+front/rear diffs+rear sub frame+all drive/half shafts+full Brembos out of an R34 right now on EBay for $4500...hell of a deal and should suit you perfectly.

              Jon.

Labour is not being accounted for, I do all my own work. However I would be interested in purchasing an upgraded gear set, but there's just no way right now i could do anything above $1000, so I was hoping someone knew of an alternate to OEM gears.

If I'm mistaken the oem gears are a pretty penny so the consensus is to continue buying used transmissions.
As of now, I've bought a used r32 GTR trans for a really good price, the individual really helped me out!
My plan is to run this transmission and rebuild my blown one.

You're welcome. That part is kept under wraps (try contacting BMS Performance in Australia).

They ran a BMS Performance modified RE403A (as found in twin turbo 300ZX, Infiniti Q45 / Cima, Patrol) when ran 8.9 sec 1/4 mile -

                            That's a Jatco transmission -

                            Some Nissans were 4wd with V6 or V8 engine (Infiniti Q45) -

I'm taking a big guess, but I assume they used a Infiniti Q45 (4wd) spec 2 speed Powerglide from US with above RB26 adaptor plate for engine. Would need to research Infiniti Q45 (4wd) 2 speed Powerglide (or 300ZX twin turbo Powerglide).
