  • Water-Meth Question

    I did a search and there seems to be varying opinions on the use of Meth-water injection.

    My car has a dual tune one at low boost on 94 and one on 100 and hi-boost

    Would adding meth-water injection for knock protection in hotter weather and keep intake temps down?

    Anyone else doing something similar?

    I thought about running it too. But I see a lot of guys removing them after small issues. IMO just another thing to go wrong.
    Dang! You got shocks, pegs... Lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?

      A lot of people take them off think ing is not working. You have to get car retuned. Not sure about combination with high octane tune. W/M kit raises your gas octanage to somewhere around 103(from 93 octane in US) if I'm not mistaken.

        I had plans of just injecting water for cooler intake temps without changing the tune. It will help with preventing a bit of detonation due to heat. Its a good idea and if the tune was safe prior to water injection, then you know it will be safe in case it should fail.

          It's definitely a good idea but can be expensive for what you'd be achieving. You could basically make similar power to your 100 octane tune on 94 and meth You'd need a meth kit (Aquamist is the only one I would use ~ $700), install (probably 8 hours + for a proper/ clean install with all the lines properly protected and a fail safe wired up) if you're paying a shop to do it can be expensive and you will also need a tune. If its just for occasional track use it probably makes more sense to just run race gas and accompanying tune but if you want to run it on high boost on a regular basis water meth might be worth it

            In my opinion water methanol should not be used as a power adder. With or without "fail safes". I agree it works quite well as advertised, and there are plenty of counts of people gaining massive amounts of hp/tq after tuning with it. However it does not take much for a blip or failure in the system to completely kill your engine.

            Remember if your ignition timing is advanced any further than the knock threshold of pump gas because of meth, then your toying with fate and could potentially end up with a paperweight of an engine. Meth is just one more add on that could fail.

            I've talked to many shops, and other local drivers. The consensus is, if you can afford to throw an engine away then its worth the risk. If you can't stomach the possiblility of being out 5-10k then don't bother. Race gas, or pump gas.

            I agree there are probably more counts of success than failure when it comes to meth, regardless of the kit brand or sales pitch, but to sum it up with a quote: "$hit happens".

            I would run meth in a heartbeat if I knew 100% there was no risk, unfortunately we aren't there yet. For the record, the current "fail safe" flow sensors on the market have also been proven to occasionally fail.

              I toyed with the idea but like my C12 tune to 1.5 bar with a limit of 1 bar on pump 94 better. It's pretty dummy proof and the car is WAY more responsive on the C12 tune capping the boost at 1 bar. When ever I feel the need to scare people I dump in some Q16 (more flexible mixing with the Q, it doesn't need to be as precise). This setup works better with bigger turbos though.

                Nothing wrong with running meth. I run it in my car and i have made my own failsafe. The AEM controller has a line out for an LED which illuminates when the meth is spraying. I mounted the LED on the dash and if it stops spraying the bright light goes off. Its not exactly like AEM's failsafe kit which would be a great purchase for anyone running meth as it cuts ignition, fuel or boost when the pump stops spraying. Its a complete failsafe. Ill probably end up running my own fail safe along with AEM's. Now as for meth additive, use 100% methyl hydrate. It is like running race fuel. Even at 30 plus PSI my car along with others wont even budge the knock meter. Its also cheaper than the mixed stuff. Yes you will need a tune to run high levels of meth.

                But like everyone on here said. Stuff fails. In that case i guess wheels fall off too. Cant trust ANYTHING

                  If you want to get a big supply of Methanol, do it in the spring. Truck stops and diesel places practically give the stuff away because it is used as an air brake de-icer and they usually don't want pallets of 1 gallon bottles kicking around all summer. I've gotten MethalHydrate for as little as $3 a gallon that way.

                    I like this post, but i have a couple of questions: what is your turbo, twin/single? How many nozzles do you have, and do you use PROGRESSIVE methanol inj kit?

                    Like, roughly saying, if I install Meth by myself and as an ON/OFF system, if Meth start spraying at let say 20 psi by 30 psi it would be kinda "lean" condition for Meth!

                        Yes as long as you you tune for it and have a very good failsafe for it. Meth will aid you in sending up that torque curve as well
