  • Any idea what intercoolers these are?

Someone asked if i had a stock intercooler i told em yeah i think so. Showed em this and they said it actually looks more like an arc intercooler than stock.

And then i have this one which is currently on the car. I had assumed it was aftermarket seeing as how the one posted above has a tag on it that says gtr(i assumed meaning it was oem), and it was painted with more rows on it. I made the assumption more rows = more cooling, and smaller rows = less volume to fill building pressure faster getting on full boost faster. anyways:

^ sorry for sub par picture, not alot of room in my garage at the front of the car...

As well as what intercoolers these are can someone lecture me on intercoolers. Which would be better to use, is my logic with the black one true? more small rails = better cooling faster boost, or is bigger rails faster boost/better cooling? Any help is appreciated =]. I'd google about it but i'm supposed to be researching stem cells right now=\. I did google the plaque on the bottom of the silver one to no avail

Part number doesn't match GTR ARC intercoolers -

But might be an old model (old part number).

This article talks about intercoolers and includes CFM flow figures for bar N plate, tube N fin, etc -

If want more hp tube n fin is best as it cools, flows better CFM wise (ARC, HDI, ARE as shown above, etc). CFM figure is the combination of air the engine sucks in, turbo pushes in. Need to do the maths to work that out and then match to correct size intercooler core.

Bar N plate is what factory use, but it's a low boost, low hp application, so it would work.

I'm fairly certain whichever one i chose the other is sold. From your comment i feel like you're saying the silver one is better, as well as from people saying its an older ARC model(2 in this thread, 1 irl, one who wants to buy one of my intercoolers). The black one currently on the car is a oem gtr one and seeing as how i'm not pushing alot of power, and am currently *near* stock it is adequate for my needs and i just need to decide what to do personally.

Thanks for info everyone, i'll read the articles linked and try educate myself a little more. Stem cell research didn't happen....

e/ Is there an email i could send the pictures to arc and have them give me an educated guess if its one of their intercoolers or not? Time to research a contact us page :P

e/e/ arc emailed, still welcoming all opinions and suggestions/knowledge on the subject

You're welcome. Stock GTR intercooler does work at high boost levels, as know of a GTR (R33??) that it was used up to around 536awhp. I think was with HKS 25/30 turbo's or similar size turbo's (N1, etc).

Also R33 GTR, R34 GTR have better stock intercoolers than stock R32 GTR. They are a cheapish upgrade for a R32 GTR.

You get somewhere around 20hp+ more with switching to tube n fin intercooler + ECU tune to suit over stock intercooler.

Lower intake temps which = lower cylinder temps, which means more ignition timing can be run without knock occuring. Extra CFM helps as well.
