  • Rb20 problems Plz help

Ok guys I need a little help.
I have done some research, and not much has helped.
    So here's the story:
My r32 gtst rb20det has a weird spitting problem. It used to happen at around 4500rpm. It would spit backfire and black huffs of smoke out the exhaust. I changed the fuel filter. Had a vacuum test done, checked the plugs, and compression came strong with 165 across all 6. No errors on the ecu. But I will double check that.

Recently in the colder weather it would start sputtering at around 2500 and as the car got warmer it would reach 4500 start sputtering and some times the car runs flawless and pulls really good.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

I would like to add that it's making full boost, car is stock, except hks bov. I just bought a wideband and after market boost gauge but I have yet to install.

If have vent to atmosphere BOV and adjusted incorrectly, can cause problems with acceleration, overfueling when backing off throttle, etc. Sometimes they are cheap copy BOV's that leak. Also check for intake airleaks and check for upgraded fuelpump.

      Coils most likely.

Sounds like carbon fouling. Check to see if there is black **** on the plugs insulator or electrode.
        Double track drift, yo.

Put the OEM bypass valve on in place of the HKS valve and see if it fixes the problem.

Bov is being recirculated. So not to sure about that.

Sad news, when I tried to start the car for school this morning it would turn over and over, but wouldn't catch.. Idk what's going on battery is new, and all lights stereo come on strong. And theres half a tank of gas in there.

I'm taking the coilpacks and plugs out tonight.
Going to clean the coil packs and put some liquid electric tape over them (read on a forum somewhere) as well check the state of the plugs
Pull up the codes on my ecu.

I'll check the fuel pump as well.

Thanks alot for al the input, it's really appreciated.

Sounds like potentially a fuel system failure. Definitely check fuel pressure.

Kk I'll search up how to do that and give it a try.

                  Thx

try messing around with the MAF connector while car is running. if the engine rpms varies it could be the connector... or else slightly knock on the black housing of the MAF.

if your plugs were fouled, the mis fires would happen every time you'd hit boost.

but it's definetaly a good idea to check plugs and make sure they are all the same looking.

So last night I pulled up the codes on the ecu, got a 55=ok
Cleaned it the PVC valves checked fuel pressure. Started her up and she started after a couple cranks but it was a crappy start. Idles were low and it sounded like she would die any second. I turned it off and about 5 mins later cranked it again and she was fine. Reved it a couple times when it got warmer and it still would sputter and backfire.
So I took out the coilpacks out some tape around them, let them sit for a bit and put them back in. I started her up again the idle was crap, there was a couple backfires (pop sound) and my stock boost gauge was in vacuum the whole time but the needle would jump from -(3/4) to about 0 so I shut her off for the night not sure what to make of it.....

Also when the car was running I pulled out the first coil, and saw that the spark was bridging form one side of the coil pack to the other. Is that normal???

No not normal. Is spark jumping while on the spark plug, or while off plug in your hand. With everything hooked up except plug gally cover, In the complete DARK, Start the car let idle and watch for spark jumping around the coils.
The coils need to be resealed with sum electrical winding insulating enamel. Not easy to find, any place that rebuilds lots of alternators should have sum or know where to get it. As long as the coil isnt leakin goo u can re-seal. Or just get sum Yellow jackets.
If your vacuum isnt holding steady around 3/4 u might have a vacuum leak, especially if its jumping up to 0/even. FYI the stock boost guage sender is on the firewall driver side, start there.

I resett the ecu, got a code 11. Which mans cas (cam angle sensor) i have an old on lying around but I knew it threw a code last time I used it. But any ways I swapped it out. Reset the ecu.
Cranked her over and she started fine. Took her for a drive and no problems what so ever, no spitting stumbling or backfiring.
I'm pretty sure it needs it's timing adjusted now. But gotta wait for payday.
Knock on wood nothing happens to it now.

Thanks alot for everyone's help. Really appreciated!!
Hope this thread is of use to other ppl.

Adjusting timing is pretty easy. Rent a inductive timing gun and follow the manual.
