  • Full Tomei rb20 head! In put please!

    Hey guys!

I just picked up my spare engine wich i will start working on shortly after the skyline is done.

Right now the rb20 is having tomei poncam, 1000cc ID injectors, aeromotive 340lph fuel pump, gt-r machined intake, full custom exhaust manifold with gt turbo, full custom exhaust, haltech pro-plug in computer.

For my next Engine set-up, i am thinking, going with the tomei procam stage 3 with a 9.25lift, solid lifter conversion, tomei spring valve, valve, valve guide, port and polish head. I will also balanced and cryo treat crank shaft, full arp bolt/stud.

My goal is to have a 450whp reliable 9000+rpm rb20. Right now i am at the reading to part to make it possible, but with my actual rb20 and turbo set up, 400whp is possible.

I want to know what you guys think, what i should run if you have any other suggestion. The car is mainly use for roadracing.

Please don't tell me go rb25 or **** like that.

If you got the money, DO it. No one that I know of has those numbers on here.
Would like to see it built.

ok so i've spun a big end bearing on my RB20DET so it's time for rebuild i'm wanting to get a bulletproof 280rwkw that i can go bash on the limiter all day at the track and i want some opinions on what sort of setup would be best so far i'm thinking bore and hone the block, port the head, run hks...
Traction is optional, so are zipties

Thanx max appreciate the kind word! This set up i might start only next winter, i checked my cost and would be around 2300$ for the head but this was without the valve and no work put in the head. I know i should'nt build another 20 but i love those engine. I am on the finishing touch for the skyline and will make it run this summer after 3 years of putting it together.

I will also upgrade from my custom exaust to a full race twin scroll manifold in the upcoming year and a half with a precision turbo, it might be a 6262 with the new wheel design and ball bearing to make it breath upon those rev.

All powers to ya, I'm taking the same path w/ my 2L instead of doing the cookie-cutter 2.5L

What piston/rod combo are you thinking and where do you find them? (I can only find supertech pistons and no rods so far)
I'm making 420BHP on a 20 w/ ARP headstuds, HKS cams and GT3071R @ 16PSI (no meth), but my next block is going to be built for 24+PSI w/ meth.

PS: I'm running 9.0 lift on hydraulic lifters w/ no problem, so your solid conversion should have no problem if you upgrade springs and retainers too.

413rwhp R32 RB20DET racecar with stock cams, etc (look at comments on first, second page for mods) -

skyline, gts, rb20, race car, dyno, wellington, lower hutt, new zealand, link g4, link, g4, link ecu, roll cage, leith, Jepsen, GT1, GT2, SS200

            On racetrack -

This was originally an R32 GTS-t type M. Now built as a race car with the original RB20DET engine with minor mods pulling a conservative 22bls boost with 413...

Add probably another 24rwhp or so with Poncams.

Higher hp engines = less hp down low. If for road racing, don't you need hp down low???

If so, compound turbocharging gives best of both worlds -

I was able to catch Marc at Boost Logic for just a second and got him to explain his turbo compound setup.

Driving with compound turbo setup -

Boost Logic Twin Turbo (Compound) test drive. SC50 and GT42-74 running 24 psi of boost (spiking 27 psi)
            RESPONSE MONSTER

The most epic signature ever "epic".

Yes i will change the spring and retainer. For the Rod, from what i could see, the stock one, could be more then enough. I was thinking of getting them shotpeened to strengthen them. As for piston i will calculate the clearance up first, see if i have to go custom piston or not.

I will also run meth, but to keep my cylinder temperature low, since the car will be beaten on the track at least once a week, i want to get the most reliability out of it.

Maybe one day i will make a build thread, i never did one... But for the one that may asked, car has every suspension part from whiteline except rear swaybar, wich i kept stock. Hsd suspension, Haltech pro-plugin with IQ3 racepak dashlogger, full stripped, Brake are hp+ and brembo all around, but will be running dtc-30 front brake pad for time attack on street tire. Full supporting engine mod+oil cooler. Custom intake and exhaust manifol/downpipe. gt2876r( i know not the best, but had a stupid deal for one of those.) Caged will be done once the car start.

Skym, You need power down, but with this set-up, i don't think i would find myself really under 4500-5000rpm. which is where i want to be when exiting a corner.

I will check in those compund turbocharger!

BTW the guy in the video is running the Cobra evolution seat, which i am going to run also, i love this seat, so comfortable!

The build has been under going for 3 year, i am not a fan of build thread either. I will take picture and would be able to send some to you.

Right now my turbo setup is up for sale i am going precision 5858 and full race manifold.
