  • RB25 VCT benifits

so before anyone says search, i have and theres nothing

I'm using an rb20 ecu and harness on my rb25 so at the moment i don't have the vct hooked up. From what I've read it advances the intake cam timing 20degress or something between 1050 - 4500 rpm, increasing low end torque and supposedly spooling the turbo quicker. so my question is; is it worth the $100 + wiring for rpm activated switch? like how much more low end torque will in it make with it turned on. Ideally if someone has 2 dyno graphs to compare that would be sweet.
just for reference I'm not using a stock turbo, its a holset hy35, the car is not tuned yet also so I'de like to get some more info on this so i can decide what to do before it gets on the dyno next week.

    thanks in advance,

With that sized turbo I can't see it making that big of a difference
With my hx40 which is massive, the vct is an additional aid
I don't have mine hooked up but plan to in the future
It's like a mild version of the hks v cam, it will be beneficial regardless

Ya that's what I was wondering about with the larger turbos. If the VCt will still have an effect with all that lag

Depends on how you set VVT. With VVT a RB26 can have more down low than RB28, RB30. It's worth keeping and valve timing needs to be reset once you open up exhaust, etc. Factory settings work on a factory engine.

If want VVT, then fit a modified internally 300zx ECU with Nistune installed (so plugs into RB25DET loom) and add Z32 AFM, Z32 AFM plug.

Tomei mention the flaws with plot on dynochart, VVT on stock SR20DET (same problem on stock RB25DET) under "Making a good use of VVT" -

See I already have an rb20 ecu fitted with nistune. So buying the msd rpm activated switch will be the easiest option.
Does anyone know the wiring schematics for it? Does the solenoid get grounded to activate and then ungrounded to deactivate at desired rpm? Also the solenoid has 2 pins does anyone know which one gets constant 12v and the other ground? Lol sorry for all the questions but if I decide to do it, I'll do 2 different dyno pulls comparing with VCT on and off.

You can remove (pressed into a 24 pin EPROM socket) and fit Nistune board to 300ZX ECU if it's a Type 2 Nistune board (Nistune website says a Type 2 Nistune board can be fitted in a 300ZX ECU, I assume early version). It might require reprogramming (new image) on Nistune board to work with 300ZX ECU.
