  • My 1989 Impul Rebuild Thread

A couple weeks back I picked up an Impul Skyline (number 88 of the 200 made) at a local insurance aucton with the intent of rebuilding it. Heres what it started out as:

It either swiped or got swiped by a new dodge ram on the drivers side, pushing the vehicle into the center curb. Both front sides needed lower control arms, tension rods, and sway bar links.

Since it got hit on the drivers side, the wheel broke from the control arm, and smashed into the back of the firewall/inner fender bending the metal in.

New suspension parts from a 240sx:

Sitting properly again on rx7 rims with the suspension all fixed up:

I was able to find the original owner, and picked up several parts from him. Heres a picture with the oem rims back on and the bumper reattached:

The car came with a gtr cluster and impul speedo, so I bought a gtst speedo from the original owner and swapped in the impul speedo:

He also sold me a set of impul horns, and I picked up a nismo horn button that I installed:

I then had it shipped off to the shop to have the inner fender well fixed up, heres what the damage was:

I got some bad new from the shop today though that has put a halt to the project. They found more rust where the damage is, so to fix it properly I need a donor vehicle to swap over pretty much that side of the front clip and a bit of the firewall. This means big big money especially with the labor involved.

I asked them whether they could just cut out the bent and rusted section, but they said it wouldnt be the proper way because it would leave a pretty weak area.

So tonight im gonna go check out a skyline that ill either use as the donor vehicle or use as the new project and partout the impul

    I like.

Maybe just transfer the limited edition IMPUL ID badge to another chassis if it has one. Usually most ID badges from Nismo, etc are in the engine bay or on engine. Or ask one of the sponsors in Japan to ring IMPUL and explain the situation. Then ask if they can make another ID badge for the replacement chassis and ask if chassis can still be recorded as a limited edition in their books.

Not too bad of an idea, the only problem being I tried to find an ID badge and all I found was the nissan badge. I still have the id badge on the strut bar, but that can be transferred to any car easily so it wouldnt hold much weight in the eyes of a future owner.

The other thing is since I bought it from an MPI auction, all I have to say I own it is a receipt saying what I payed at the auction. They have all the original documents and such so Id have to get it all repaired and registered with mpi to have access to those documents. So if I were to find someone in Japan who could help me out they would need some of the papers im assuming to say that is in mine which I dont think the reciept I have would do much.

Just more ******* hurdles that ive had to face with mpi time and time again. Id love to fix it or properly have the Impul Edition transferred to another car, but both ways im running into the same amount of hassle

Sorry no, I sold them to my buddy, he found replacement lips for the front. If you just need two I believe I saw an identical pair on zilvia.net

Well, it looks like I may be picking up another 4 door that will be recieving the impul parts. Right now though its all up in the air.

Well I just got back from a 20 hour drive (winnipeg to martensville sk and back to winnipeg) in period of 24 hours. I left friday morning at 3am and got back to winnipeg saturday morning 2:30 am.

I picked up another 4 door that will be recieving alot of the parts from the impul as I have decided to use the impul as a donor car.

Hate to part out such a rare car, but im also really excited and happy with the new 4 door project.

Been awhile since Ive updated this thread, the new skyline has kept me really busy.

The reason I decided to part out the Impul is because the damage ended up being more expensive to fix then the clean roller that I picked up. Not too mention with the rust on the Impul it had the potential to turn into a big can of worms.

So I brought the new skyline back home, pulled the engine from the impul and put it in the new 4 door.

Heres a couple crappy pics of the swap:

New car hiding in the background, kind of:

                    Screamer pipe installed:

Overall it went pretty well, had some issues with the motor mounts but other then that it all went good.

Ive been driving it since friday night, and it actually runs alot better then it did in the impul, idle is alot smoother, no leaks either.

I also had a chassis ground problem though which caused the electronics to go mad when I hit boost, but it was a simple fix and it absolutely screams now.

I still have a few small things, mostly cosmetic to do. Here it is with my Rx7:

Ohh, and if anyone needs r32 parts shoot me a pm, chances are I got what you need.

Im gonna be using the impul front bumper and spoiler, the back bumper corner is pretty busted up. As for paint I think im just gonna shoot the bumper and spoiler flat black like the sideskirts but I havent quite decided yet.
